Your Favourite F1 car

I think there might have been a thread about this before but with no search functionality on this site at the moment, I've created another thread.

Anyway my favourite F1 car has always been the 1996 Williams FW18, closely followed by the FW19 from the following year.

Loved the shape of both cars, their dominance and the livery.

It would be good if they'd do a series of 30 or 60 min documentaries about various dominant cars over the years. How the concept came about, how they designed, built and tested them, clips of them racing, interviews with the designers and drivers.

I think that would be cool anyway.

i loved the renault the time alonso was driving it.

He's still driving it. And it's horrible!

(Presume you meant the Mild Seven colours)

I liked the cars from late 90s in general. Before they started to sprout a new winglet or fin ever year until they got to last year where they were hardly recognisable as F1 cars anymore.

The 1999 Jordan was a gorgeous looking car.

The Williams Hill won his title in. Got to sit in one as well when I was a kid. :D :P

The Jordan 191 was a very nice F1 car as was the Lotus 49. Maybe I just like green cars?

Out of this years cars I like the Red Bull best. It's very tightly packaged especially around the nosecone and it's one of those cars that just looks like its doing 200mph even when it's standing still.

Always been my personal favourite. It wasn't just that it was Irish, or that coincidentally it was green, it was just a well put together car that really looked the part. It's hard to believe that it was Gary Anderson's first F1 design, and it was no slouch either.

I got to sit into that jordan 199 car in a motor show, it was some car and my favourite F1 car. I also like Damon Hills Williams Renault 1994-95 and Schumachers Benotten of 1994-95. McLaren Mercedes of the late 1990s early 2000 was also a true beauty. The F1 cars now are horrible looking.

Best thing about the yellow jordans were the clever use of 'buzzin Hornets' instead of Benson & Hedges (illegal) branding when they were at a circuit where cigarette advertising was banned. with the yellow livery it was genius! unlike the lame use of a barcode on Ferrari's current cars instead of Marlboro smokes :P

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,199 ✭✭✭G-Money

Bring bag the cigarette advertising, that's what I say :D

I loved the Rothmans livery on the 1995-1997 Williams cars. I didn't like the 1994 Williams shape even though the livery was quite similar.

Not only Jordan. Remember Rothamans Williams Renault and their blue 'Racing' or '???' on the rear wing.

    Jordan 191
    Jordan 197
    Jordan 199
    96 Williams
    97 Williams
    94 Benneton

I think that this years Brawn may find its way into that list for some reason. Memories I'd say

Good call Brian, that was a great looking car. I love all the strange looking cars. The Ferrari was another great looking weird car from 83. The Tyrrell P34, ground effects cars without front wings, the silly plastic wedge front wings from the early 70's, the 711 March with the tea tray wing, even this years cars with the oversized front wings appeal to me.

    Here are some of mine..

This years Red Bull is a lovely looking car, as is the Brawn. Although I think the paint job on the Red Bull could be much better.

I still love the 96 and 97 Williams that Hill and Villeneuve won their titles in. I loved the livery and just the shape of the car.

I found the clip below from the 1997 finale at Jerez. I love the sound of the Renault engine in the car.

The JP lotus had great livery but looked awful. In fact the end of the 80's-mid 90's was the best time for F1 designs, modern, sophisticated developments before last year's winglet-laden monstrosities.

The older the cars are, the more ridiculous and amatuerish they look. Those late 70's jobs with the huge plastic wedge at the front, or the 80's models with the driver sitting alomst over the front wheels with his head poking up like a wooden toy, ridiculous.

Jordan always made good looking cars.

The F1 cars these days are horrible with the reduced back-wing and huge front wing.

so aggressive, so well packaged, and that V10... spectacular

    the old skool ones :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,199 ✭✭✭G-Money

Do you know the funny thing about F1 cars. They are all obviously designed to be as fast as possible and I think that's ultimately what the designers and aerodynamicists care about. But isn't funny that while performance is the main goal, the cars almost always seem to look beautiful.

I know there are a few rough looking ones around. This years Renault was pretty ugly when it first debut'd and the team did a good job hiding it by being in the mid field for most of the year.

But I mean, look at the Brawn and Red Bull cars. Probably the best looking cars on the grid this year.

I just wish for 2010 they'd make the front wings a little less wide.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,199 ✭✭✭G-Money

I loved the 96 and 97 Williams cars. They had a nice shape, brilliant livery and they were the fastest cars on the grid.

Really like Mika hakkinens MP4/13 and like above the Jordan 199 was a gorgeous car.
Engine sound wise, for me nothing competes with the V12 engined Ferrari 412. Pure audio porn. Just listen to those gear changes...

McLaren MP4/2 & MP4/5B for their simple lines and 'that' colour scheme
McLaren MP4-19A for the 'dolphin' nose
    &
Ferrari 641, again for the simple lines and true blood red colour.
