I've just seen the new price list from Ford for the Focus for 2010, and other than the RS & ST there are no petrols listed, only diesels.

Can any Ford bods confirm if this is the new model line-up or is it just a preliminary price list?

Is this a sign of the times, is petrol becoming the "niche" fuel?

New model line up chief - surprised it's as substantial as it is - rumour was it was only going to be the style spec with options.

Smaller less powerful engine, lower emissions (and therefore VRT), yet the cost of a Style 5dr diesel has gone up by €540!

Think Ford need an accountant from Audi / BMW.

True, they need a price drop, but it's the lack of petrol that's making my jaw drop. Think back 18 months and imagine what your reaction would have been if you heard Ford were offering their bread-and-butter model in diesel only...

The times, they are a-becoming very different.

no way? no ford focus petrol variants are available new!?

I would have thought a 1.4 petrol wouldn't have been overly high in the emissions ratings?

Is this just Irish or is it global, if the former it's probably due to VRT rates, if the later that's a real shocker.

I'd say it's Irish for the VRT issues.

The price increase is balanced by A/C, Fogs, Alloys and Bluetooth being standard now on the Style.

Has to be Ireland only, you'd never sell another Focus in the US if you went diesel-only.

The Focus sold in the US is still based on the MkI.

I was passing a Ford dealer the other day and he had about 10 brand new Foci, every single one of them was a TDCi. Ford's bread and butter petrol engines (in the Focus anyway) are nothing to write home about, they have been around for years and generally unchanged. The 1.4 litre (80bhp) and 1.6 litre (100bhp) engines are 16v units and have been around since the MkI was lauched back in 1998. They are not exactly cutting edge or Co2 friendly. You have to buy a Ghia or Titanium model to get the variable valve version of the 1.6 which was expensive.

Also remember that the current Focus is now coming to the end of it's life so hopefully we will see some new fresh petrol engines in the MkIII.

True but in many European countries they have had similar taxations to our most recent for a long while. Belgium being prime example!

On fuel alone petrol is almost 20% more expensive there!

It doesnt really surprise me, and it makes sense.

The only people who buy 1.4 Foci anymore are from the rental sector.

Why would you buy a 1.4 when you could have a 1.6TCDi with half the road tax, and a nicer car to drive, for only a small premium? Madness I tells ya....

Expect a big price drop from Ford on the way too......;)

It is a bit of a shock but then again it's easily justified!

Bar the 1.4,ST & RS focus, you wont see many other petrols models out there anyway in the latest Focus!

Even in the recession i have been suprised how many new RS Focus's i have seen on the road, i wonder are they all Demos :D

not sure if thats true, my Mk1 had a yamaha 1.6 engine (which was brilliant), and my current Mk2 has a 1.6 Ford/Volvo engine; theres also a newer version of same called the duratec 1.6, its been available for about 2-3 years; it was a €1600 option when i got mine.
