    Hi peeps,

I have an 80gb drive in my ps3 and I'm looking to upgrade it, possibly this weekend.

In terms of formatting an internal drive to Fat32...... how can this be physically done? Do I have to put it in a pc/laptop to format it or is it possible to hook it up (like "usb, ethernet method")

Looking to find out before I buy a drive,

    Appreciate any and all help.

not sure does the internal drive need be fat32, ps3 has its own built in formatting tool that will make it what ever it needs be and adds encryption when you install it,

but for backing up stuff, or if you wanted to play movies from a usb drives, those drives themselves need to be fat32 for the ps3 to open them

very easy, just plug it into your usb slot on pc/laptop i use gparted to convert to fat32 thats on linux
if your on xp the swissknife program is handy
ive used paragon backup to do it on vista

thread about it last week here

    Thanks Bobby,

In my perusal of forums here & there nobody has explicitly said what, if any, formatting process the went through. If it's in the Ps3 that's no problem.

I went into peats yesterday to price a drive and they told me I would have to format it to Fat32.

I'm getting it for game installation rather than music/vids. I just hope there is an easy way rather that opening up my pc and putting it in.

I'm on vista but I heard swissknife will work?

Once it's done I'll out up everything.

no you wont have to fat32 the internal drive, just swap it with the old one, the ps3 will look after everything else,
fat32 for backups of settings etc.. if you want to restore then to new drive

That's perfect! Plug and Play was what I was hoping for.

I have an external Fat32 so the backup should be ok.

I'll get the drive this week and have some nerdy fun installing it.

    Really appreciate the help Bobby,

    Cheers!
