It just means that a person was discharge because their contract expired after X amount of years service. It being good or bad depends on the write up from your CO.

if this is in relation to being discharged from the rdf for not signing on for another period then it is a good discharge, the only real bad discharges are either failure of drug tests or kicked out on disciplinary grounds

If I am correct, the minimum contract for PDF personnel is 5 years service?

If one was to sign this contract but after 2 years decided that he was finished with army life how does he go about getting discharged from the army? If he doesn't see out his contract completely is a soldier dishonourably discharged or is he given this 'termination of engagement' thing?
Desertion would not be an issue here.

Its possibly to buy your way out AFAIK but it can be VERY expensive.

You can discharge by purchase, cost is €300 for someone on a 5yr contract.

Its neither honorable or dishonorable. Again your service being good or bad depends on how you acted during time in the Army.

Thats a lot cheaper than I thought it was. Does it go up if you've done a lot of courses or anything?

For Officers it's alot more expensive as they are supposed to pay back all college fee's.

Discharge by purchase cost is dependant on how much service is left to go and how many/type of courses you have completed. If you have a speciality (ie CIS, Eng/apprenticeship) you may have a battle on your hands! Get your Ord Room to get the cost of the discharge from Soldiers Payroll.

Remember, if you are discharging before you have completed your engagement (9 yrs) you will have a reserve commitment to be completed from date of discharge to termination of engagement, you can purchase your way out of that too, IIRC it costs about €10 to do so. The reserve commitment means you can be called up for a period of service, once a year every year, for the remaining period.

If your a 'line soldier' its only a few hundred to buy yourself out but if your on tech pay its thousands.
Tech 2 costs 2500 to buy your way out!!!!

Termination of Engagement is a term used to define the end of a military career, the bit you have to watch out for is under what section of Admin Instr A10 Para 58 the individual is being discharged under. There are several there that you would not want on a discharge book.
