Am interested if anyone has opinions on this car. Have checked Honest John, What Car, etc.. and the reviews are generally good but with some mixed complaints. Am particularly interested in real fuel consumption, reliability, comfort... am looking at possibly getting a 2005 version. Thanks a lot.

My brother has one a few years, and nothing catastrophic has gone wrong, but lots of things have fallen off, and everything else rattles.

Great for fuel efficiency. I've 1.6HDi in a C5 and it returns 1200km to a tank. The trip computer indicates an average 0f 4.8l/100km. 110BHP is adequate for a car of that size - I find it ample in the larger C5 - not racing material mind.

Yes, there are some reliability issues but in general there's nothing to be overly concerned about. Some C4s had a few recalls so if it's a main dealer ask him to ensure that all outstanding recalls have been done before you take delivery. If you're not buying from a main dealer then call a main dealer and give them the chassis number and they'll tell you if any are outstanding. Any outstanding recalls will be completed by a Citroën main dealer at no cost to you.

Comfort is a sort of 'beauty is the eye of the beholder' so it'll be a personal choice but I find French cars are usually quite comfortable.

I've had the C4 1.6HDI (92) since new 2005. I've done 112000kms to date and haven't experience any problems. Fuel economy is around 1100/1200km per 60 litres tank.
I have since bought my wife the C4 Grand Picasso.

I would buy another if I was in the market for a car.

Good motor in my opinion. My uncle won a C5 and then he bought a C4 for his wife. The C4 has over 160k on it with no problems apart from routine maintenance and news shocks, exhausts, clutch etc. Lovely little car I think. For the daily driver who's not bothered about how fast it goes around the Nurburgring it's just as good as a focus or a golf and much better value second had due to the poor residual values of Citroens. Get yourself a bargain and you'll be laughing.

Its a Citroen diesel so PSA engine/drivetrain citroen suspension = no real probs on that account, seats/ride comfy. The rest, ahem ..... , its a Citroen ;) you could be lucky or unlucky but it's a nice car. At the right price I'd have no worries and fuel cost isn't ever going to be an issue with a HDI.

I love those little cars, it has a few mild idiosyncrasies like Citroens of old (the steering wheel revolving around the boss) and looks like a Citroen. The 110bhp engine would be a great match for the car given that most (Irish) ones make do with the less powerful engine.

They are not the car journo's favorite, nor do they have a reputation for rock solid reliability but if you're lucky you could have a great little car...

If you get a chance try a test drive in a Yaris diesel 1.4 turbo, 0-100kms in 10.7secs 63mpg(4.5L/100kms) very roomy, camchain engine, oil & filter change every 15,000kms. reliable too.
    08 reg emissions tax band A €104

OP is looking for opinions on a Citroen C4 (small family hatch) and you try and convince them to buy a Toyota supermini? Do you work for Toyota and are you spamming? Or are you just a huge Toyota fan?

My parents have a 1.4 petrol '05 model from new. Its never let them down, sailed thru the nct but there does seem to be a lot of recalls on it. Stuff like door locks etc. Even recently when it's well out of warranty. From memory there was never any engine, gearbox or suppension issues.
It's not my cup of tea but it suits them down to the ground

My boss's wife does 150 miles a day in an 05 one. Its a 1.4 petrol. I've driven it once. Can't remember mileage but its pretty high. Felt fresh enough to be honest. Lots of rattles but with our roads everything will rattle eventually. Never hear horror stories about it...which is a lot different from what he says about his e-class...

One thing i forgot to mention in my earlier post was with the
1.6 hdi 110bhp will have a diesel partical filter which may need
to be replaced @around 90-100,000 mls and if its the same as the 307s/407's it will need its additive tank topped up also...
but these filters can be removed easily and power washed to clean
    them...:)
I use mobil 1 5w30 esp engine oil on my 407 which is dpf friendly...:)
The oil is critical on these engines as the only hold over 3 litres of oil and
with the dpf regens the oil gets pretty hot.
Its also maybe a good idea to use an engine flush every 3rd oil change...:)

Sorry if i'm freaking you out here but i like to do the best for my car...:D

All of the above relates to most of the modern diesels out there today.
    Ron.

OP said he'll keep it (opinions expressed about Citroen) in mind, Yaris diesel worth considering too. I've owned both and do 1000kms+ a week commuting to work. Each to their own, whatever OP ends up buying I hope it goes well. So I'm not spamming Mod nor do I work for Toyota. Just another car enthusiast, Yaris ticks a lot more boxes for me. :)
