Any ideas on this one? Thinking of a 2006 model. Need a high car to tootle my elderly mother around in. How are these like service wise? Any pitfalls to look out for?

Worst car Mercedes ever made. Get a Meriva or Zafira.

I liked the A-class ever since I got a lift in a long-wheel-base A170. The rear leg room was amazing - better than an S-class - so it would be very good for people with reduced mobility. Underrated car but probably a little expensive. If you get a good deal, you could do a lot worse.

Depending on mileage, the diesel might be worth looking at.

Good grief! If you wanted to get a cheaper car, surely a Ford Focus C-max would be better than an opel rot-box.

Nothing wrong with Opels, they're a bit bland but they do the job.

Bugger. Every car I put my eye on has some kind of fault! Don't really want anything bigger than a 1.4 so that rules out the Zafira. Test drove a Renault Modus which was lovely and comfortable to drive. Just a bit put off by the whole headlamp take off front bumper access thing!

Yeah but we're comparing it to a B-Class. Its kinda like saying would you prefer to burn to death or freeze to death.:D Both are shocking bad cars IMO. Zafira is a bloody good car though. Infact just about everything in the B-Class segment is better than a B-Class. Scenic /C-Max / Picasso all do the job better.

all cars have the odd the fault...

but seriously the A -class is a horribly over priced, bad driving box...
Zafira is good, very good reliable car...
but if its just for one elederly person.... then a zafira is overkill, they are more family/kids cars... meriva is a better choice from the opel range.

look at things like golf Plus, corolla verso, scenic, meriva, c-max.... much as I hate golf, pick of the bunch would be the golf plus then the meriva IMHO

Have any of you actually a driven an A-Class?

OP asked about an A-class for general driving, not a track day car. Nobody who has said they don't like it has given any reason why! Yes, it was over-priced new but used cars prices are comparible with the competition and it will probably hold its value better.

    yes I have driven one,
the engineis very underpowered and struggles a bit on hills, there is little to no feedback from the steering.
I found for a car of this type to be cramped and uncomfortable to drive on long journeys..
no-one here has suggested any track day cars, all cars mentioned here have been better cars than the A-Class from a normal day to day driving.

A150's are very reliable, cheap to maintain and not to be confused with the piece of crap A140,but both are horrible to drive
