Nexen Tires - any good?

Was ringing round the Sligo area trying to get a good price to buy and fit 4 tires on my 2000 Polo. Well, replacing 3 as I've one Semperit that's almost new and I'll put that in the boot as a spare.

Best price I got was 4 Nexen Tires for €200 including fitting.

They appear to get quite positive reviews on Google.

Anyone have any personal experiences with them?

Just bought a car with these on it. Kinda feels like the front wheels "float" across the road under hard corning, like the tyres have no traction. I questioned the tyre brand with some Mechanics and nobody ever heard of them.

I dont know if the tyres are at fault as I dont have a "before" to compare to, but they would be my initial suspicion.

They came with the alloys i got for my passat in a 215/45/17.

I found the grip to be decent with them, the fronts wore after about 15k miles, and I still have the same set on the rear after 50k miles with 4mm left!

Think they are N3000 or something.

I'd say they are pretty good for a cheaper brand overall, never had any problems.

Cheers for the feedback so far lads.

I won't be doing huge mileage anyways on them to be fair.

They're grand, I had 'em on a previous car. Not the last word in grip or feel, but they are good in the wet and last a decent length of time.

NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER cheap out on tyres!

Tyres ore your only contact to the road. Budget/economy tyres DO NOT have the same level of grip as Premium tyres.

You get what you pay for. I always buy discounted PREMIUM tyres.

You life is worth more than saving €100 on cheap tyres

While that is true and I agree tyres are important, there is a train of thought that due to stringent safety standards, todays "cheap" tyres (Kumho, just about stretching to Falken) are superior to the extremely expensive "premium" branded tyres were 10years ago. 10Years Ago nobody was saying Goodyear F1s (or whatever) were cheap dodgy tyres.

Also the price differential from cheap to expensive ("premium") on wide, large tyres is more than EUR100 per tyre and given how potholed the roads have got, an expensive tyre is just as likely to be destroyed by hitting a hole wrong.

I would agree that tyre technology have greatly improved in the last 10-20 years.

Buying tyres is all about compromises.

Grip vs Wear, Higher grip = faster wear
Sidewalls- thinner walls means a quieter ride, thicker is more immune to damage (potholes)
    etc etc

Best piece of advice I was given. Buy the best you can afford.

Also check out www.tyretest.com for other users opinions on tyres

unfortunately there is cheap quality - falken 452s at less than 80 in the majority of tyres sizes from camskill

and cheap tat that a lot of the irish guys sell, wanli, linlongs, and other such plastic rubbish, sometimes at more than the likes of falkens

Yeah, its amasing just how well respected Falken 452's are, worldwide, forum to forum. I had them too, only ever had concern in the snow (they arent Winters, so no surprise). Falken are my "benchmark" tyre for price/performance.

I use these at the moment, excellent all rounder. It is my #1 discounted 'premium' tyre.
