Ethnic names for Zoo animals

Dublin zoo have have announced the winners of a competition to name the two tiger cubs born there this year. The winning entries are "Emas" and "Wanita." Recent births at the zoo were an elephant called Budi, a white rhinoceros called Zukiskwa, and giraffes called Sandsteen and Neema.

Say what you like, but these are all bloody stupid names. Does someone seriously thing that these animals are going to feel more at home if they are given names of people from the countries they would have been born in if they weren't born in a zoo?

If elephants are born in Ireland, they should be given proper names like Seamus and Padraig. If they are born in Germany, Gunther and Helmut. In Greece, Aristotle and Socrates. Etc.

It's time to wise up, zookeepers. Your faux-ethnic bullsh*t isn't fooling anyone.

Did you enter the competition? Did you vote for Padraig or Seamus?

If not, then what are you complaining about?

When did you last visit Dublin Zoo?

They ALWAYS give animals Arabic names or something, it's stupid

I want to go to the zoo and see Tiger cubs Mary and John

Now ladies and gentlemen, for your viewing pleasure, from the heartlands of Africa, here's 'Dave' the elephant!

    Wouldn't be great would it?

Why not Johner the tiger, Briano the rhino or Rasher the boar? Truely Irish then. Wacker the elephant has a nice ring to it.

The tiger cubs should have been called Bertie and Charlie after the two great architects of the tiger economy, may their contributions to us all live on and always be remembered.

The elephant should have been named Harney and the Rhino should have been called O'Donoghue on account of it's thick hide.

    Others may include:

Coughlan - for a baby Giraffe on account of the neck
Biffo - for a Warthog - self explanatory
Higgins - for all baby Penguins
Willie - for all Shaggy Llamas
    Jack O'Connor - for a baby Hypocritapottamus

    etc., etc.

No, I didn't enter, or vote. I last visited Dublin zoo over the summer and noticed that all the animals have silly, faux-exotic names.

Just like the type of names that people gave to spa hotels and restaurants during the Celtic tiger years.

What I am complaining about is naffness, plain and simple.

Should have called them terms and conditions

They are kinda exotic animals though, fair enough if there was Badibabino the fresian, but surely a tiger shouldn't be called Paddy?

Baby Camel: Mammy, why do we have long eyelashes
Mammy Camel: To keep the desert sand out of our eyes son
Baby Camel: Mammy, why do we have humps
Mammy Camel: To stoe water so we don't die on our long desert trips
Baby Camel: Mammy, why do we have big feet
Mammy Camel: To stop us sinking in the soft sand
Baby Camel: Mammy, why are we in Phoenix Park?
    Mammy Cammel: ...

No need to complain about the naffness in the world by adding to it.

Wanita is Irish. I'm sure I've heard the name being called before.

    WAN-EEE-AH, C'mere. And bring Jacinta n Brit-neeee

well the animals get unsettled when they hear the name Mary after Mary Harney's last visit. Two Baboons and a baby elephant went missing that day.

They should use traditional elephant names e.g:

    Babar
    Tantor
    Nelly
    Stephen

Far better names then Anto the lion or deco the elephant.

Women are a different species to tigers. There are no Irish girls called Capall, or Asal.

Although these would be more accurate descriptions of them than their actual names in an awful lot of cases.

    You sure?

They had a competition when that baby elephant was born. You had to suggest a name of Asian origin and why you chose it.

Myself and about twenty others suggested Optimus Prime as that name originates from a Japanese toyline and Optimus is big, strong, kind and powerful.

The name that was chosen only received nine votes.

    Complete scam!

I've been saying it for years-close the Zoo down and that would solve the name problem.

Well the zoo is on the north side so what would the op suggest we call the animals?

    Nailer
    Whacker
    Johner
    Micka

Oh and I brought my nephew to the zoo during the summer, his favourite animal was Eddie the penguin. Is that an ok name?
