Apparently in Limerick people are either "backbones" or "soda cakes". Does anyone have any idea where this comes from? I'm aware that it's definitely something from a past generation, or two. Want to find out for my Dad who says he's a "backbone".

Never heard of backbone to be honest.

A sodacake is someone from Thomondgate. In the days of the tolls on Thomond Bridge to get into town, the people in Thomondgate had little money and used to bake sodacakes and offer them instead of the toll when crossing into town.
