Macbook won't stop sleeping?

So I went to power on, and all was good, gray screen apple logo. Then the screen went blank and mac went to sleep! Hit the space bar and it came back to life. Then back to sleep after 3 secs. This kept happening as far as the mac got to the desktop screen. So all seems well software wise is it hardware problem? It is unuseable in it's current state as it wants to sleep all the time, any ideas?

Take out the battery and just run off the AC adaptor and see if it still happens.

Tried it without the battery and it's the same.

Are you sure it is going to sleep and that it's not just the screen going off? Is the LED light pulsing when this happens?

Go to System Prefs > Energy Saver and make sure the settings are correct.

    Have you installed anything recently?

It's going to sleep alright. Pulsing light is on, in fact it never goes off, even when it wakes for 3 secs.

So you can get to the Energy Safer prefs?

What Macbook is it? How old? Any previous problems? Did you install any new software recently? Such as system updates? 3rd-party software, anything?

    Try the following:

    Resetting the SMC:

    Zapping the PRAM:

    Booting into safe mode:

Do have the install disc? Try using that to run a hardware test (hold D on startup), see here:

Ok I did try all of those, what is odd is in the hardware test only the ram is tested. Also the backlight did not come on. However when I went to install again the backlight did come on, but the trackpad click would not work. I am begining to think the logic board has had it. Or something to do with power management. If there are any more ideas let me know. Cheers.

Probably the logic board alright. Is it still under warranty?

I wonder if its fallen victim to the narcolepsy issue that affected powerbooks.
On the powerbooks, (Never checked a MacBook TBH) theres a temp sensor under the trackpad that can send invalid signals, cause OSX to think the laptop is overheating and go to sleep. You can make a change in open firmware to stop this happening. Might be a good starting point for you....
