Yamaha LS9-16 Matrix Buses

Yo. Using this desk for recording a tv show next week. Was thinking best option was to take the master mix from two of the matrix's.

Anyone here know how to set that up on the LS9? I dont have the desk to practice with but is it possible to select the master fader and then in the mix/matrix section send to whatever matrix's? The manual confuses me:pac:

    Cheers

Nice board, that's the one where you can snapshot the head amps?

I'm not going to ask why you want to send the matrix busses to the master mix, why don't you either take the output from the matrix or the master buss in the first place.

Anyway, I had to drive one of those a while back, this was useful

Saw that cheers! Yeah great desk.

No I wanna send the master mix to 2 of the matrix's. So I can have stereo L/R in XLR

    Hey Pistons,

So you want your main L/R out, and then another L/R out on another pair of XLRs as well?

If I've got your question right, I think you might be able to do that with the matrixes (matrices?) but there's an easier way. Basically the 8 XLR outputs on the back of the desk are "omni outs" - so you can assign more or less anything you want to them.

So, for example, on the standard "factory" setup for an LS9-16, omni outs 1-6 are assigned to mixes 1-6 (eg for monitor sends etc), and omni outs 7 and 8 are L/R out. So if you need additional L/R outs, as far as I'm aware, you could assign, say, omni 5 and 6 to also be L/R outs. I've never had the need to do this myself, but I don't see any reason you shouldn't be able to assign the same bus to multiple omni outs.

You do it through "output port setup" as described on page 97 of the LS9 manual - select the output port for omni 1-8, then set the channel select buttons for omni 5 and 6 to ST L and ST R respectively.

I hope that makes sense (and I've answered the right question)... I'll try it myself if I get a chance this weekend, just to make sure it's possible, but I can't imagine it's not.

Also, you can get the offline software for the desk free from the Yamaha Pro Audio site - really handy if you want to start getting familiar with it.

Wait till you get a load of me!

I may be wrong but can't you set up your routing etc at home and just load it in with a USB stick or something? And I bet there's a digital or USB out already in there, at least there shoule be...

Fine desk, been using it for well over a year now. The Omni 7+8 are the Master Outputs in XLR, you also have Omni 1-6 XLR outputs which are your Aux sends (but can be changed to anything you want, gotta love digital).

We have the expansion card which gives an extra 16 inputs and 8 outputs, great package if you can get your hands on it.

Yeah you can set up the patch in the offline editor ahead of time, and transfer it across via USB stick or ethernet. The ethernet is great, I have a wireless router, and just picked up a secondhand tablet PC off ebay - should be a nice easy way of setting up wedge mixes during soundcheck :) Although there are some features you can't access this way including, annoyingly, delays on the omni outs.

You're right, there's a 2-track digital out on co-ax, it's patched in much the same way as the omnis. And you can record straight to memory stick (albeit only to mp3), but the patch for that is in the record dialogue rather than being in with the rest of the output patching.

The software you can download is a bit less complicated than the software on the desk itself :pac:

If i'm not able to use 4 omni's for L/R out I'll just send the L and R to two Matrices and send them to two of the omnis.

I assume its not that confusing. Can practice with it on Monday anyway

Also can you set the extra L/R ill be using to pre insert mode, so if I was using the EQ for the room it wouldn't be going to tape?

I haven't actually done this myself, and I might be a bit late as you say the gig's Monday (sorry, been offline all weekend!). But anyway...

This probably isn't possible if you use the "patch main L/R out to a second pair of omnis" method. But I'd imagine you can do it by using the 2 matrix sends as you mentioned. Page 77 of the manual looks like it's describing what you want.

I'm guessing once you're stood in front of the desk and you have a little while to play with it, you should find it pretty straightforward anyway. Best of luck with it. :)

Hi Savman, I have the LS9 too. Can you post a link to the expansion I/O with sixteen ins and 8 outs.

    Thanks a mill

Add a pair of Behringer ADA8000's, couple of ADAT cables and you are good to go.

um...i mix on an LS9 32 and i record the bands (with permission ofc, for my own portfolio) with a USB pen drive! you can do that on the ls9 16 aswell. i dont quite understand why you want to record from a matrix

edit: i see you want to multi-track the recording, i know understand why you wanted to try that.

best of luck with the recording!
