Can anyone advise the best route to cycle from Templeogue College to Leinster House? I don't know the southside at all and the DTO site says it can't find a route for me.

Will be going in during morning rush hour ... prefer as few right turns as possible

    thanks

    Leinster House eh?

Can't comment for all the route but I've always enjoyed the bit from Terenure into town as detailed here, although the roads in Rathmines are a pile of crap these days. But there's a buslane/cycle lane almost all of the way in. There's a right turn at the Bleeding Horse but it's usually quite easy to get into the right lane, either at stopped traffic or before.

Note this route brings you straight onto St. Stephen's Green - I used to walk the bit which brought you head first onto ongoing traffic at the Luas stop there, but rejoin traffic at the lights. Lots of people cycle this bit though.

Another option for you might be going over the Harold's Cross bridge but I've never enjoyed going over it, especially when trying to turn right at Leonard's Corner after.

Why not print out a map and just try out different routes to see what suits you? That's what I do.

    DTO JP suggests this:

    picture.php?albumid=775&pictureid=4068

I used Fortfield Road as your origin. Templeogue Road to Harold's Cross Road would join this route at the park in Harold's Cross.

If it were me, I'd prefer Dónal's suggestion.

If you're looking for a more traffic calmed route, say so and I'll have another look. Rathmines/Ranelagh used to be my part of town, so I know the back roads pretty well.

This used to be my commute, more or less. It depends on which side of Leinster House you're going to. When I parked on the Leinster Lawn side I followed mockler007's route, except pulling a pedestrian u-turn at the north-east corner of the Green, down Merrion Row and left onto Merrion Street. I always hated Leeson Street at both ends.

Mostly, though, I parked in the National Library because it was sheltered. That meant turning off the canal at Portobello, right at the Bleeding Horse, down Harcourt Street, Stephen's Green West, Dawson Street and Molesworth Street.
    Harold's Crossroad
Every time I see this on Google Maps I have an image of someone in the mapping office seeing "Harolds Cross Road" and helpfully correcting it.

Thanks for the info everyone. I can go to either side of LH, whichever is easier to get to. I'm only doing this once though so it's not a matter of trying out different routes to see which I prefer!

Well, first you need to join up your local branch of one of the political parties. Avoid FF or the Greens if you are keen to get to Leinster House within the next decade. Work in the local branch, and see about getting nominated to run for the local council at the next elections....

In that case, for the ease of navigation I'd go with Dónal's route. The Harold's X route has more "churn" of the traffic in it and the roads are worse.
