Pick some of those genius and creative brains for writing.

is there rules when it comes to writing for different things? like if your doing a simple advertisement, article, biography or novel, does all styles of writing have to be different?

lets pick two, for example a simple advert and a biography, how would both contrast?

    Thanks in advance

This is actually one of the things they really focus on for Leaving Cert English. (Well, at least my teacher did when he prepared us for Leaving Cert 2007)

All good writing should be styled depending on the audience for whom that piece is written. Things like the reader's age, gender, education, interests, etc, are all brought into account.

The fact that you can pinpoint two examples (the advert and the biography) would suggest you understand this already.

Are you sure this isn't part of some sort of assignment?

I don't imagine any writer thinks you could write a biography in the style of an advertisement.

The only rule is that what you write has to suit the subject and the reader. After that, it's up to you.

thank you for your kind replies.

my brother has invited me to write an article for him in the paper, he is a photogrpaher and he is doing a write up in a wedding paper, advertising his wedding. On the paper he will have three wedding photographs and I need to create a good intro to get people in and reading it, its got to be done by monday.

its not my trade ( creative writing etc ) but he seems to think I can handle it *shock*:pac:

    Thanks again

Try to get your hands on similar articles by more experienced writers. See what techniques they use, what elements of the article catch your attention, what pieces you'd feel like changing and how the important information is conveyed.

Make notes of these things. Don't be afraid to brainstorm, even if that includes spider graphs or other simple essay plans. Plan how you will focus on each of the most important elements of your article, and how you will link each topic to the next. Repeat a key word, or paraphrase the closing sentence of one paragraph in the opening sentence of the next to help keep the theme flowing through the essay.

Don't be afraid to use descriptive language, but at the same time don't lose focus of what it is you're intending to write: an interesting, informative and awareness-raising article.
