Is my wife paying too much for this car? (01 Mondeo TD 90BHP LX diesel 4dr)

My wife wants to go and buy a 4 door diesel 2001 Mondeo TD 90BHP with 110k on the clock from a friend, they are moving away and don't really want to store the car or leave it to realtives to sell from them.

Car is nice and clean and just had some work done on it and I guess the seller is trying to get their money back.

So just on age and mileage I said fine max 2k for it. Now I'm in trouble. Asking price is 3.5k which she would pay and which seems to be the carzone dealer price which I think is more wishful thinking than anything.

So any advice? Could a diesel 2001 Mondeo TD 90BHP with 110k on the clock worth anything like €3.5k ?

I would say over priced especially as they are looking to sell quick. 2K should do it.

They are not the type of friends i would want:D
Car is worth 2-2.5k if they are lucky. A guy i know recently got the exact same mondeo except it was 02 for 3k and it was off a dealer with 6 months warranty.

rock and hard place lol, as a rule i never would buy car from friend or sell to one,,, say u buy it for 3.5 ,next month it breaks down and costs a fortune to fix, its one way to fall out with friends,
or you only offer 2k for it,, and your friend thinks you a cheap skate lol and want car for nothing,,,
if you want to buy it, let them try sell it first for 3.5... and if they cant make em a take it or leave it offer,,,

The fact that its recently gotten some work done on it- is irrelevant. A private sale is always going to be considerably less than a dealership sale (and does not involve the private seller providing a warranty). Even if it is a nice car- the going rate for a private sale might stretch to 2,500-2,600.....

The car is not worth €3,500. I would be up front with them and say that you have priced a few similar cars elsewhere and found a few examples to be cheaper. Show them the examples from carzone or other sources, etc. Then say to them if they are willing to drop their price you would consider buying it otherwise you will pass.

3.5k is a bit steep, I paid the same recently for a 02 passat tdi comfortline with 88k miles and a new nct on it,its a buyers market at the moment so she would definitely wanna get it cheaper than that

If you think they can handle it, tell them you've done some research and asked around and it is worth €2k which you will pay for it. If you think that would upset them, just tell them you're short of funds and can't buy the car after all - sorry!

Tell them you've decided not to get a new car - and get one when they've gone.

    Most politically favourable move.

... it does sum up the situation.

The only plus is that its my wife that wants the car and if she does buy it and anything goes wrong it won't be my fault, as she says "a womans place is in the wrong".

Current situation is I've said no way 3.5k so I think its going on carzone or similar at that price, hope it sells for that, if not there's 2k waiting here for it. I think my wife offered 2.5k without telling me and that wasn't accepted so we'll wait and see.

The one on donedeal.ie is the problem, seller sees those prices has no idea of the current value of his vehicle and says mines worth at least that as its lower milage.

But tbh I have no idea of car values either I just automatically assume that a car is worth a lot less than a dealer is asking and that a private seller can either sell at a very low price to a dealer or make a sencible deal thats a good bit less than a forecourt price.

Thanks Saab Ed but I'm 99% sure that one would be the wrong colour ;)

    2 - 2.5 k max

    It's a good car so 2.5k if it's a long-ish NCT.

A year ago I paid 4.5k for an '02 115bhp with 1.5yrs NCT and 105k on the clock, it's all a matter of perspective.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,045 ✭✭✭ttm

It has about 1.5years on NCT and I think subject to serious check over I'll say final offer 2.5k and provide a bit of supporting information that thats not such a bad deal.

Are there any important wear parts on these that need replacing like timing belts afaik thats not a worry as they have a timing chain? Just so I can factor in any major service items that might need doing.

The revenues VRT calculator is notorious for overvaluing cars, it hasn't really been updated in the last year to account for the collapse in car prices. It says...

    STATISTICAL CODE: 40186261
    MAKE: FORD
MODEL: MONDEO 2.0 TD (From Oct. 2000)
    VERSION: DI LX 115BHP 04DR / SALOON / MANUAL / DIESEL /
    CO2 EMISSIONS: 143

    MILEAGE: 110000 MILES
DATE OF FIRST REGISTRATION: MARCH 2001

    OPEN MARKET SELLING PRICE: €2837

Now when you correct for market reality and a quick sale, €2500 sounds more than generous and €2000 sounds like a serious offer that you would make to a complete stranger.

    2 - 2.5 k max
    +1

    Spot on IMHO

No more need to convince me that 2-2.5k is the right sort figure, but at least my wife has read all these posts and I'm off the hook for being a real meany and not allowing her to the pay the 3.5k asking price :)

2k is a serious offer the cash is there. I don't mind paying another 500 after checking it out as I wouldn't even look at the car if I didn't think it was a genuine sale. I suspect the car has cost the owner not much less than a thousand to sort out recent problems (lots of unneeded replacement parts that fixed nothing - think the problem turned out to be fuel "lift" pump) not my problem but a reason they might want to hold out on price so we'll see ;). Will let you all know the result.

Here you go. 2002 Ford Mondeo Zetec 107k on the clock for €3,300. The LX model is the base model, the Zetec is mid model with the Ghia being top model.

Damn, OP, bloomin' missed opportunity for you imho.........

How, you may ask ?:confused:

Simple, say 'yes Dear', and take her 3.5k.

Then, buy the Mondeo for 2k.

Then, with the 1500 in your pocket, buy this for yourself:
