Started playing this on MAME recently, remembering it from the C64 years ago and I've become really addicted to it! Recommend it...

...if you can stomach the music and the cutesiness! I'll never be able to watch Wizard of Oz in the same way again!

It's the sequel to Bubble Bobble but you're a young boy (instead of a bubble blowing dinosaur) and you have to murder cute creatures with lethal rainbows on your journey to the top of each level (scrolls upwards)

Was playing this recently myself. While I loved it back in the day and played it for hours, I just couldn't get into it this time round. Too repetitive I think. The layout doesn't allow much change in the gameplay.

I've gotten into the habit of keeping track of my high-scores (save state after entering my initials) and trying to beat them, something I used never do back in the day, it was all about progressing as far as possible, but this has really given a new lease of life on some games... This and Street Fighter 2

It's all the hidden secrets that kept me hooked. Secret doors, permenant powers.... This game was amazing! Taito really came out with some great stuff in the late 80's.

Maybe you can explain then, how do you get the secret door when you find all the different coloured gems? I managed it once but I don't know what I did and I've found them all since and the door hasn't appeared at the boss's level...

Simple really, all you do is collect the gems in order red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Theres a door when you reach the island boss that you enter.

Theres also cheats that can be imputed at the tittle screen just like in Bubble Bobble. I always used the permentant fast running cheat :)

Rainbow Islands and Bubble Bobble, two of the greatest arcade games ever made, not so sure about Parasol Stars though.
The C64 version of Rainbow Islands was amazing, very good indeed.
The C64 versions of Road Blasters and New Zealand Story were also pretty good, if memory serves.

Two of my favourite PS2 disks are the Taito retrospectives, with all those lovely games on them,

Sad they had to change the lineups between the Xbox and PS2 editions, should've had everything on both.

Although the Japanese got the best deal, with 4 seperate releases of Taito classics, pretty much covering everything,

    Jammy Gits!

I agree both conversions to the c64 were very good. They had to cut out some stuff (The warps in TNZS) but I enjoyed them both. Parasol stars was pretty good although it was never an arcade. It was released on the Amiga and maybe the SNES.

I have the taito collection for my PSP. It's not bad but the only game I really ever played on it was TNZS.
