Any flashing warning lights coming on?
Could be any number of sensor(s) gone.
Best have a mechanic check it over, befor it gets worse.
    And doesnt start at all.

Hook it up to VAGCOM and it should identify the problem.

Might sound mad, but check that the earth connection on your
car battery is tight. Sometimes if there a bit loose thay can cause
    the car to cut out.
Sometimes its something simple(fingers crossed for you)

If the earth connection is ok, remove the battery and battery cage and you may find a wiring loom running underneath along the chassis leg has been cut due to the friction of the battery, wires may just need to be repaired and insulated.
Failing that try crankshaft position sensor-need diagnostic tool to check this.

Could also be the idle air control valve needing a clean

You don't have your car key on a big bunch of keys by any chance?

I have a smiliar problem with my Vectra - had it looked at twice by the mechanic and reckoned he fixed it - but each time it returned a few days later!

Strange thing is - it comes and goes! For a few days it could be very well behaved - then it would cut out every few minutes - only ever happens when I'm slowing down or if Im waiting at the lights; it suddendly dies! But if I keep the revs up, it wont cut out! So I've learned to live with it for now - must get it looked at again before I sell it!

Problem could be the COIL PACK, which are a common problem.
Costs approx 60 euro in Motor Factors. 10 minute job to replace.

ignition cables and engine misfiring ???

most likely the idle valve needs cleaning or a vacuum pipe split / removed,
take off the air filter housing and look at the throttle butterfly if its black clean it out with a toothbrush / soft cloth not with a screwdriver, also look at the vacuum pipe from the brake servo to the engine make sure there are no cracks in it

+1, heavy keys can damage the ignition.

Also there used to be a fusible link (like a big fuse) that was dodgy in the golfs though I would imagine that thay have all been replased on warranty by now. It might be worth looking at.

I came across an instance of a car costantly cutting out while cornering or slowing and the problem could never be found until the owner, having collected their car said it had happened just up the road. Turned out when the car was being left in it was with the single spare key. The driver had their key on a big bunch of keys and the bunch of keys would start swinging and turn off the ignition.
