    Hi,

Does anyone have any experience of dealing with the Irish Vintage Society and their insurance policies?

€25 membership and then €133 per annum for third party insurance for cars over 20 years old?

Sounds too good to be true.

Does anyone know the ins and outs of their policy?

If I remember rightly (I looked into it 4/5 years ago) you needed to provide an engineers report and the policy offered a very limited mileage.

They're a nuisance to deal with too...

Ok, I made some calls and got put onto FBD who run the scheme for them.

20 years old, based on the reg plate, not date of first registration, so from the first of january they'll take all 1990 reg cars.

Requires another policy, thats fine, I have my daily driver.

    5000 miles limited mileage.

Mods are ok, told them I have an engine swap, suspension and brake mods, just need an engineers report.

€158 including club membership for third party, or an extra €21 for third party fire and theft.

I'm so excited, and I just can hide it, I'm about to lose control and I think I like it.

    man I need a crunchie.

My 101 is covered via the IVS although apart from annual membership I deal direct with O'Riordans in Cork who are their brokers, actual insurer is FBD.

Didn't need engineers report. At first they weren't going to cover me as I tow a trailer but I put in writing that the trailer went with the vehicle and was for show use only and they were happy.

I'm with hibernian through o'Riordan Insurances, after 3 years of insolence, snail's-pace responses and intransigence with IVS.

My Spitfire cost about 135, and adding the Marina brought it up to 250 for the two seperate policies.

No engineer's report, no club membership.

And they are polite when they answer the phone....which is EVERY time I ring. How refreshing.

Carole Nash are offering a very good COMPREHENSIVE classic policy for not much more than that, around the €190 mark with a smaller fee for additional cars. I have three cars on the one classic policy for just under €300 per annum, including breakdown recovery, no engineer's report, no need for a daily driver.
Call them up and see what they can do for you...

    that sounds pretty good Trevor.

My local Axa office (Thurles) were great when I insured my 110, happily dealt a slightly unusual vehicle and with my slightly dodgy UK driving record :o Couldn't give me classic cover on my 101 though as it's a commercial :(

Just one thing to double check with any insurer offering Fully Comp, make sure to work with an aggreed value in writing, and double check with them that that is indeed the value they are going to pay you in the event of a total loss claim. If they can't do that, paying for Fully comp is basically a waste of money, because if you think classic cars are overpriced in Ireland, wait until you find out what insurance companies think they are worth :D.

If no aggreed value is approved beforehand, they can come back in the event of a claim and put whatever value they feel like on it, which is more than likely to be considerably less that what you had thought.

Try IVETA, they might be better.

I've no need for fully comp cover, it's a two grand car, lodging a claim is only gonna be counterproductive.

Carole nash wont talk to me as the car is modified. I'll talk to axa and the others though and see what they say.

Its funny, this car will go from uninsurable to supercheap insurance just cos it's a year older. irish insurance companies are ridiculous.

Exactly how old does the car have to be to qualify for 'cheap' insurance though? Are axa 1990 aswell??

There are no hard and fast rules. Depends on the car too. You'll have to ring around. See the link about classic insurance in the sticky.

You wont get classic insurance until you are 25 years old.
Maybe get a relative to insure it as a normal car and put you down as a named driver?

Anyone have an FBD IVS classic policy does it cover commuting to work , I took out a classic policy with AXA and It seems to say social domestic and pleasure excluding commuting to work so it is therefore useless. I became a member of the IVS today so Il get a quote and hopefully cover with FBD tomorrow and cancel the AXA one in the cooling off period.

Just to say (before the thread dsappears for another few years!), I ended up getting getting classic insurance with the IVS and FBD a couple of years ago and I found them to be great. Primarily because they didn't put stupid obstacles in the way when I wanted to insure my then daily driver as a classic, unlike Carole Nash, First Ireland, etc.

This is very interesting. I tried FBD to insure my 1971 Merc as a daily driver and they toldme there was no way they would do it. Use would be limited to "going to shows". I haven't tried through IVS though. Do you think it owuld make a difference?
