i'm looking at buying a vw at the moment from a dealer.its at a good price but has no history on the book.the dealer is saying he knows very little about it as he bought it from another dealer which doesnt sound right to me as if i was him i would like to know its history.the dealers idea of history is "its got 60k done and one owner".now i have done a cartell report on it and has come back with no problems.
is it possible to contact vw ireland to get any info on it?recalls etc

I find it odd that the car doesn't have at least one main dealer service stamp. Too many potential unknowns here, I would look elsewhere, there are plenty of cars out there with valid service histories to be dwelling over one with none.

Honestly, i'd walk. If it had been serviced regularly and the mileage was genuine then the SH would be in the glovebox.

Considering the amount of commercial vehicles for sale up and down country I don't understand OP why you are even still considering buying this one. The vehicle could be legit but there is no way of proving this which means there are too many unanswered questions.

Why put yourself through all that potential hassle?

Does that mean you need to pay VAT on it if you buy it, as I assume commercial is VAT free?

But you'll also find a lot of cars in this country aren't properly serviced too...

Just call the original dealer and ask them if you know who they are

If one has a VAT registered company you claim the VAT back, there is not such thing as VAT free.
