Was anyone else here at the irish premiere of Cirque du Freak:The Vampire's Assistant in the Omniplex Limerick on the 13th of October? I don't know anyone else who was at it (besides ME and one of my friends) and I want to hear some other opinions of it...
I thought it was entertaining enough, they changed it from the book a bit too much and it got totally americanized which I didn't like. Still it was pretty enjoyable and I thought Steve was cast particularly well. He matched my image of him perfectly. At the end Darren Shan said in the Q & A session that this movie was based on the first trilogy, ie. the first three books, ie. Cirque du Freak, The Vampire's Assistant AND Tunnels of Blood which wasn't in the movie at all apart from Murlough's death. That disappointed me as well. Overall though I liked it.

    Any other opinions on it?

When I first heard about this americanized version a few years back I hated the thought but when I saw the trailer it seemed ok.I'm going to see it tomorrow as I've read the books since I was 12 ^^ and still red the Dementa now((18)):)

I have to be honest, I was looking forward to this film so much, but I left the screening disappointed.

The acting is okay, but Reilly is miscast. There is one particular scene near the beginning between Reilly and Dafoe that was just so cringeworthy, Reilly was totally out of his depth. I haven't read the book but I assumed the scene was meant to be taken in a serious tone, but it just came off in a comical way.

The effects were also pretty poor and it in a way reminded me of Twilight. I'm guessing that, like Twilight, the budget wasn't really there and they were hoping that the movie would be a big enough hit in order to warrant a much bigger budget for the sequel. The Twilight franchise got their wish, I doubt the Cirque Du Freak franchise will.

All this being said I thought the story was decent, and I was entertained and happy enough until the last 20 mins or so where the film fell flat for its' finale. It's definitely a decent film, a think the rating of 10% among top critics on Rotten Tomatoes is very harsh. I would say this reaction has been born out of frustration with the genre more than anything else. I say this because some of the criticisms make no sense. One critic says it's hard to know where you're at watching the film, I thought it was pretty straight forward and never felt confused. Another critic said that Chris Massoglia made Daniel Radcliffe look like a talented thesp, again I think this is very harsh, especially given that Radcliffe has a lot more to work with than Massoglia and is still pretty poor.

2.5/5 for me, it would have been 3 if the finale was stronger.

Thanked purely because of the Tomkins quote in your sig :D

On Topic: TBH I didn't really get excited about this when I saw the trailer so I wont be rushing to see it.

The effects were fairly poor tbh. The fight scenes. where all the special effects peolpe did was leave a trail of colour behind them, were disgraceful. At the premiere, according to Darren Shan, this movie had a budget of 80,000,000 (though he didn't say whether this was € or $). For that price, you'd hope they could do better than that!!!

Jesus that's inexcusable, the only thing I can think of is that maybe the books suggest that the trail of colours are actually there. However I did think the cinematography was good, it presented a great looking atmosphere.
