ECU for '01 Micra

A friend has asked how much she should pay for a ECU (electrical control unit?? her words not mine) for a Nissan Micra. Garage has told her a second hand one and labour will cost €500. I though it sounded steep. Any idea where she could get one or how much it should cost?

any idea how the ECU went in the first place?
i didnt think they went bang at all?
