the night before you go hunting mix a good bit of pasta into the dogs food its meant to relase carbs slowly and gives them more energy im going to try it my self with my own dogs this seadon

Started a thread on this awhile back about packing on a bit of weight for the season. Found a good quality puppy food & tripe has worked a treat.
Pasta would def work as we used have to eat it before rugby matches for the said purpose...

After a long day in the field esp coming into the colder weather I always had a few sheeps hearts on the boil for them. I think they looked more forward to that than going out hunting.

just did a little research on this and apparently dogs don't get energy from carbs like humans. carbs are important for tissue and muscle growth/replacement so helps prevent injury, but there is enough carbs in regular dry dog food already. they get their energy and stamina from fat stores in there body so an increase in fatty food helps. tripe seems to be the ideal food to give this. but too much will increase body weight. also the best time to feed is at least 24 hours before he starts hunting or as near as you can get it

if you change your mutts diet to much before increased activity it can work against you.

any changes should be done gradually , a over nite increase in protein will run the guts out of your dog.

getting your dogs fit is as important .

generally people tend to feed there working dogs a dried kibble of about 25% protein and add in tripe over the working period- once the dogs are finished for the season they tend to reduce the protein to about 17-19% protein. hope that is of use :)
