I'm thinking of getting one of these amps for bedroom pratice and recording.

They're around €250 on Thomann which is great(The 10 inch version - the 8 incher is meant to be naff). I'm wondering is there anywhere in Ireland(Cork, Limerick or Dublin, preferably Cork) that has them in for a decent price? A lot of places are trying to undercut Thomann at the moment to stay in business.

    I'm open to any alternatives.

From my experience, haggle. You should find some shops that will give you a better price than those you'll find on the net. Good for local business, and good for your pocket. ;)

How much were they? not showing up on the website.

Also isn't Xmusic way out at the Red Cow inn? I'm not sure where to get there. I read they were opening a store in town but I never found it.

It was 259 or something like that, pretty much thomann's price. And yes they're the ones out at the red cow.

The amps I havent tried but they look quite good and I like the idea of switchable outputs. Will have to give them a test this weekend. I suppse the equivelent would be the champ 600 and gretsch electromatic amp but the AC4 has more to it.

As far as the shop is concerened its on the red line luas and I think the bus numbers are 51b/c,68,69.

Where do you think the cheapest place to get one would be?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,152 ✭✭✭dazberry

The cheapest I have seen in ROI is here, probably around €210/220 atm. The prices on the site are in sterling (even though the shop is in Kerry).

Cool, I could go to Kerry for a day trip. Would still cost less than getting it off Thomann.

Can you actually call into them or are they web only?

Doesn't seem to be a way for me to get there via Bus.

Any other shops have the AC4 in?

I've seen it around £180 in guitar shops in Belfast. Matchetts Music - pretty sure was a 10" one (oo-er!).

Great little amps for blues, classic rock etc. Definitely worth £180.

I'm looking to play more alternative rock with it. Not that I mind classic rock tones, but I'm worried it might be voiced a bit "bluesy" for me. I generally like Vox tones though. I was hoping I'd get kinda Joy Division, Bauhaus, The Chameleons, Post Punk kinda sounds out of it.

I only tried it with a strat and blues/ rock is my thing so can only speak for that. I'm sure, though, it could cope with everything except full-on metal.

Plenty of vids on youtube but nothing compares to trying one out yourself, does it?

No. Usually there is a saturation point for which it averages out and you can tell, but there's very few really good demos of it at the moment. I need to hear high quality mp3s not Youtube videos. If I hear it mic'd well I'll at least know how it is for recording.

I actually might be playing Metal through it, or rather, high gain tones. I'll be using a Barber Dirty Bomb which is a fairly hard rock distortion(though does amazing vintage cranked Fendery tones and some Marshall too) and I'm looking for a nice warm amp that it'll sound good through. I'll be using lots of Fuzz too, a Russian Big Muff and a couple of Devi Ever pedals.

I'm fairly satisfied with the dirt on it, as I like Vox sounds and it has a slight Marshally edge as some have remarked. It's more how it takes pedals I'm worried about. I guess a lot of my favourite tones are kinda vintage I just prefer them in a more modern context. I love Fender Twins/Bassmen, Vox AC15/AC30s, vintage Orange/Matamps. Not as gone on pre JCM Marshalls but I've heard some lovely tones from them.

The old Marshalls started their evolution as copies of the Bassman. :pac:

Did you try out the AC4 yet? I was vaguely interested in it myself when I first saw it.

Nope, found nowhere that stocks it yet. Haven't been able to get up to Dublin or that one shop in the middle of nowhere in Kerry.

I was in XMusic (in Dublin) on Sunday and asked and they have none left in stock.

Ordered it from Candy Apple Red guitars in Kerry, class amp. Bit too loud for bedroom practice even on 1/4w, but it's great for pedals.

been on the lookout for a wee tube amp for bedroom recording. I could plug in my blues deluxe, but would have to wait for a free house, so as to not annoy anyone! Would this do the job, as in a nice clean sound, but not LOUD. Could I record with it a comfortable level, and not annoy anyone else in the house?

I do prefer using an amp, rather than amplitube (which ain't bad)...

For good cleans/dirty cleans, absolutely. For raging rock tones it's a bit too loud to use often I find. Considering a power scaling mod or an OD pedal at the moment.

yerra, I wouldn't be needing high powered OD at all. If I could get a nice clean/dirty clean without blowing the walls off the place, I would go for it...Sounds like it could be good....

It'd be great for you then. Personally my favourite dirty clean sound anyway(though Fender Twins come in close, given how hard it is to get them to break up that's obviously not practical!)

    Smaller speaker isn't very good.
