Good bless. Great manager. Anyone remember him as a wrestler?

I've just heard this and boy, I am shocked, I loved this guy! famed for his garish shirts, tied up beard and wild interviews, this man knew how to talk and be talked about.

By the time I got to watching wrestling, the Captain was the wildly popular manager of the British Bulldogs and was winding down his wrestling career as a face. In time I learnt that not only did he manage the Bulldogs, he was a hated figure in wrestling, indeed he was probably the most hated man in wrestling for years.

For most of his career, his stable was a who's who of the most hated heels on the mat; Don Muraco, Greg Valentine, the Wild Samoans, the evil Soviet ex WWF World Champion Ivan Koloff, the Moondogs, Blackjack Mulligan, the Fabulous Moolah, Ray "Cripppler" Stevens, the Honourable Mr. Fuji, Pat Patterson, Nikolai Volkof and the Iron Sheik, George "the Animal" Steele, the Valiant Brothers, Prof Tanaka, Larry "Ax" Hennig and Ken Patera were all led to the ring by the evil Captain Lou. In total, he led 15 teams to WWF gold

Lou's biggest role in the sport came in 1983 when the WWF broke onto MTV; Lou helped wrestling gain huge mainstream media profile after appearing in Cyndi Lauper's smash hits Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Time After Time. From then, Lou was one of the public faces of wrestling and he regularly appeared on TV numerous times, even making it onto Miami Vice and voicing Mario on the Super Mario Brothers cartoon.

In latter years his weight led to severe heart problems yet he still maintained links with wrestling, returning to the WWF in 1994 when he led the Headshrinkers to the tag team titles. In 1996, Lou was inducted in the WWE hall of fame, an apt honour for one of the few genuine breakthrough mainstream figures of pro wrestling.

May you rest in noise, Cap cos peace is not a word that sits with you well! :)
