Just wondering what are the rules regarding shoes to be worn on a course? Does anyone wear those metal spikes anymore? are they allowed?

most courses wouldnt let u use the metal spikes they tend to rip the greens up ...althought i think tiger and sum of the pros still wear them ,they can get away with anything :)

I'm not sure if you can get metal spikes anymore; I guess you can.

Do metal spikes cause more damage to the greens......possibly but I'm not sure. They maybe did around the hole so the hole would need to be moved more often.

The modern plastic spikes are much better than they used to be......the old ones tended to clog up and I remember them being worse when there was "slime" around.

The metal spikes definitely caused more damage in the locked room to floors and to carpets.

Most courses allow soft spikes only now but there are some which do allow metal spikes

Normally wear steel spikes, especially in wet weather. Also, research now indicates that while everyone wearing them does damage greens, a small % of people wearing them helps aerate greens, doing more good than harm.

While it was a big thing 10 or 15 years ago, as far as I can tell, most clubs seem to allow them - or else aren't bothered by the efw who wear them even if against their rules. Remember turning up to play one prominent Dublin club about 15 years ago when the transition was being made and they were so sticky about it, they had shelves of shoes to lend to people like me rather than let me out in my spikes.

yeah i seem to remember one course this year actually encouraged the wearing of steels, maybe euro club or arklow, cant remember, but you're dead right the modern spikes wreck the greens
