Questions regarding test routes.

    Hi,

I've seen a book or two that contain maps for the test routes used by various test centers.

I would have thought that the tester would have preplanned what test routes he was going to give on a given day, I had no idea that there were only a small amount of possible routes you could be taken on. Is this true?

If so, are these maps reliable enough, that you would that you'd be taken on one of lets say 4 routes?

Thanks for all replies and sorry if this has been posted before, the search is done at the moment.

    Wayne.

Oh of course, the learning to drive seems to be coming along nicely I think, I should be booking my test soon, but when I originally saw the test route book I thought "Oh this makes things a little easier" :)

Where did you see a book with the test routes in it?
Might be worth a look if I could get my hands on one :)

This is where I found it, you have to buy them by test center. It says 1 route map, I'm not sure if this is 1 sample route or 1 map with a number of possible routes on them.

I guess it would still be handy to see typical routes and to do a few practice runs on them, keeping note of the area's where a hill start might be required and a few locations where turnabouts and reversing maneuvers are possible. A couple of pretest sessions would really help too.

    Hi,

Just be aware that these are not the 'official' test routes from the RSA - they are 'Sample' routes. The ones I've seen are OK but do not cover everything or all possibilities.

Practising on test routes is of some benefit in terms of knowing road layouts - knowing in advance whether junctions are STOP or Yield etc - but dont get too caught up with knowing the exact route. You should practice all types of junctions, roundabouts, traffic light configurations etc and then whatever turns up on the test day you will be able to handle :) Generally if you stay within a 4-5 km radius of the test center you will have covered every possible road that you can go on!

One other point about using test routes - try not to over use the spots for reversing, turnabout, hill start etc during the day time. If you see another L driver (especially if they have a yellow-jacket wearing passenger) then move on - chances are they are doing their test so try not to interfere or impede them, I'm sure if it was you you'd be grateful.
