Power jack starting to melt!

    Hey folks,
Looking for a bit of advice. I've an Acer Ferrari, the older version. For the last year or so, the power jack has been a wee bit loose when plugged in, and I'd have to jiggle it a bit sometimes for it to start charging. In the last week however, in some positions in the socket, it's started heating up massively, ot the extent that Ifirst noticed it when I smelled burning plastic. The yellow plastic tip of it is blackened and a bit melted. It still charges, but heats up in about five minutes until it's too hot to hold. It's also heating up the surrounding area in the laptop.

I've no idea what's causing this, or what to do with it. Any ideas? I'd see about borrowing someone elses power cord to see if it's just mine, but I don't know anyone with another Ferrari.

Theres a short circuit in there, either in the lead, or the socket. Most likely the socket.

    Stop using it.

    Your laptop may catch fire.

Sounds like a serious safety issue. You should stop using it, and contact Acer (even if out of warranty). If it has safety implications its likely something they would want to investigate.

Firstly, you need to get the socket repaired\replaced. Then before you use it you will need another adaptor as that is damaged aswell. Ya don't need a Ferrari adaptor. Other acer adaptors should suit yours. Just make sure the voltage, Amps and pin size are correct.

And as other have pointed out. Stop using it. It's a safety hazard.

Well, contacted Acer with no reply.

Switched to the netbook for the time being, but does anyone know of a repair place that do jobs like this, and don't just send them away for presumably an expensive service?
