I think I've pretty much bought new everything this year.

Got new Nike ACG jacket and North Face salopettes in sales in Ireland at the end of the northern hemisphere season, got a new helmet as well once I spotted one I liked going cheap as well and looked a better standard than the one I already had. I then also got another "free" Salomon jacket as part of the training course I did in NZ, although I prefered my other one and wished I had taken that with me instead. Then making use of various discounts in New Zealand I got new Salomon boots and Atomic skis once down there and sold my old Salomon Crossmax skis to a friend.

I spent far more than I had intended initially this on ski gear, and now my new skis and boots are actually "older" than my old stuff after the amount of use it got already this year.

I've a new pair of Fischer Race SC's sitting in the cellar since April last year! Can't wait to get out on them! Other than that no new purchases - went a bit crazy getting kitted out as an ice-hockey goalie for me to be able to afford any new stuff :o

    /jealous

I need to buy new skis. Having made the selection at the end of last year from the various skis I tested...and then not bought them...I'm looking at it all over again and rethinking based on the new 2010 ranges.

Was up in Zweisimmen at the weekend, and the top of the hill is already white. It won't last, of course, and hte season doesn't open properly till December...but its really made me start itching to go find my new planks.

Are the ones you looked at last year still not a hell of a lot cheaper than 2010 models? I bought last April cause I knew I needed new ones and got them a lot cheaper than probably even now with the only downside being I have to sit looking at them for 8 months without been able to use them :(

Any recommendations for nice day resorts near Zürich? Might have reason to be spending some time there this winter :)

Well, my problem was that I was seeing nothing but 2010-range skis in all the shops as they started stocking for the winter.

As it is, I stuck my nose into somewhere today to see what they had from the 2010 range....and they had some XRC 1100 skis from last year, in my size(s), for relatively reasonable money.

Now I just have to get the last struggle over with. My ideal length would be 160, but they don't do that....so its either 156 or 163. My head says to get the 163s, my heart is looking at the shorter ones.

I'll go buy them at the weekend.

I don't really know that many resorts up that end of the country. What sort of travel time would you consider as "near"? ALso...public transport, or private?

The one that would immediately spring to mind is Engelberg, which is about 2 hours by rail, changing in Lucerne. There's definitely closer slopes, though.

In case you're not familiar with it..SBB do a "snow'n'rail" package every year, to a bunch of slopes....return train ticket and day-pass for the slopes. Its usually pretty good value, and I'm a big fan of using rail to get to/from the slopes....although it does mean you end up at the same venues as everyone else who's railing it.

I'll ask around any which way.

I tried these ones too - I tried the 163's but they kept getting away from me! I was on 150 skis before though! With the Fischer's the 160 were ok and I could control them - which is why I went for them in the end. What used to happen on the Heads was if I was even a little bit too far back they were off and I was a passenger! If I was you i'd go with the 156's but then you're probably taller than me and a better skier!

Can do either. Public transport is pretty expensive from what i've seen so more than likely car. Up to 2 hours each way - although 1 or so would be preferred :)

I heard about the snow and rail thing too. Again would depend on costs. Tis all just in the planning stages still though :)

At just under 5'7" (or 170cm), I'd be quite surprised if I'm taller then you.

As all-mountain skis, I should go for something about 10cm shorter then me...which would be the 160cm ideal. I'm shying away from the 163s because they were almost frighteningly fast the day I rented them...and that wasn't even on hard-packed, fast pistes.

156s would be just soooooo much more fun from the get-go, but maybe not as good for improving my technique over the long run.

Yep that was my impression too. I was on quite wet pistes when i was trying them. The guy in the shop said that 163 should be ok for me too (I'm about 165) but I would have been a lot happier with the ski a little shorter! As above though the Fischer 160's were fine!

Good luck on that front OG, I've been down that road and just ended up buying a new pair off the internet. If you do find somewhere, let us know!!

Its done. I went into the shop today, and bought the 163s.

I reckon the first few days out on the slopes this year will involve a lot of just practicing and honing my technique, rather than just being comfortable with what I know I was doing wrong but getting away with.

What swung it for me was ski length calculators like this one all consistently giving me lengths over 160 as the right ski for me.

    Psyched.

looks like I'll have to start checking in luggage, maybe ;) got them for £310 the custom footpan was extra though. Do not really know if it was good value, about average or slightly above. If in London I would highly recomend this shop, I was very picky and feel the fitting was great, ask for Adrian at www.47degrees.com but I would say go mid-week and allow plenty of time.

Poor but happy, alot of people waste money on worse things then winter holidays.
Really gone for it this year.... went to "snow and rock" during the week and my wife got the boots-ski's-binding-poles package, also we bought a couple of the racing socks (different thread ;)) and a 175 deluxe wheelie board bag.
The plan is ski's, clothes & helmets in the bag, boots as carry on.
Hopefully Ryanair agree with us :)

We spent €240 in there today in about 5 minutes.
My g/f finally got some perfect fitting gloves for €50
She bought me Burton Customs for my Xmas pressie (The Legend!!! :) )
And I got myself a binding tool for a tenner.

I'm never going back there again!! :D

Check the weight on your board bag all filled, afaik Ryanair's weight limit on bags is 15kg and they are likely to screw you if you don't come in under the limit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 291 ✭✭granty1987

for boardbags, ryanairs limit is 20kilos but last weekend i got away coming and going to edinburgh with it and it weighed 30kilos! happy days!

we have weighed the board bag filled with our gear... it was 18kg all in, the boot bag (hand luggage)weighed 6kg so we have room for a few purchases over there ;)

Saturday, I finally had the chance to take these out to play.

    Sweeeeeeet.

The pistes were mostly hard, but not too icy. Some spots had loose crud floating about.

The skis handled beautifully. Almost as agile as my old SCs were on the good-condition stuff, but when they hit something churned up, they just cut through it or floated over it, where the old skis used to give that "I've run into glue" feeling.

Overall, they just put a dirty big smile on my face, all day long.

Having lost one of my two pairs of presicription sunglasses (moron that I am), I decided to finally check out soft lenses. Given that I'm astygmatic beyond what can normally be corrected with dailies, I didn't hold out much hope, but I was really pleasantly surprised. They're not quite perfect, but plenty good enough.

So, I've now added daily contacts and a luverly set of Giro Basis goggles to my equipment for this year.

Hopefully, I'll get up to the hills next weekend. There's been plenty of new snow this week, and more due over the coming days.

Recently went to opticians for contacts for this very reason! I was looking at expensive OTG goggles and decided contacts would be a cheaper alternative. I found the first few days a bit weird but after a while they become so comfortable that you don't even know they are in! I went to Vision Express in Liffey valley, (really nice guys in there!). He recommended Johnson & Johnson Acuvue 1 day Moist disposables. They were the first ones I tried and they are great, but at 65 yoyos for a months supply, I did some digging and came across daysoftlenses.com.

They are just as good, absolutely no difference, comfortable etc, and I find the packaging alot smaller than the Acuvue ones. The delivery was really quick and at a fraction of the cost of big name brands, I can't recommend them highly enough!

Bought these..... Salomon x-wing tornado titaniums but with the z12 bindings in snow & rock dundrum the evening before I flew off on hols :)http://www.salomon.com/uk/#/ski/skis/all-mountain/xw-tornado-ti---z14-lab there was a 20% sale so they worked out over €180 cheaper than in the resort !!!
We were already paying ski carriage for my wife ski's so adding mine cost nothing extra.
    Love them ...... lots :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,443 ✭✭✭✭bonkey

They're beautiful skis. I rented a pair last year, and it was a toss-up between them and the Head's that I finally went for.

/me is looking out at the snow chucking down otuside, and lamenting that I can't make it to the hills this weekend :(

am i bovvered Bought my dad a pair of these and they are seriously popular with the Irish Instructors and all instructors over Europe.

    Great Choice

My Fischers are handling wonderfully too - Cutting through stuff instead of complaining about it. Had a nice fall though when I overestimated they're/my stopping capabilities on cut-up/icy pistes!

More snow here in the towns than in the mountains! If it was Ireland i'd be able to ski down to the shops but here they salt the roads :)

Oh...I also picked up a pair of Falke SK4 socks before I went up there and am now a convert. They were just oceans more comfortable then the cheap tat I've been wearing up until now.

Falke socks are awsome a little pricey and there are alternatives out there but I love them

Managed to Finally get my hands on a pair of 3V Factory Lab Skis :D:D:D:D

Cant wait to get them on snow in 2 weeks
