Hey ya, just wondering if anybody could shed some little light on my situation..

I am currently living at home (under25) and getting job seekers but have been means tested and getting very little.

So now im thinking about moving out of home to find a job but was wondering what my situation would be in relation to moving not being means tested against my parents and getting the full job seekers and if I would qualify for rent allowance.

I would really appreciate any help :)

Thanks

I am in a similar situation myself only I am older and been contributing to the state coffers for some time now yet seeking rent allowance is not an easy route for some of us.

You have to prove you are in fact in need of your own place, as far as I am aware its up to your Co Council to determine if you are in need of your own place. You should contact your local Co Council and have them send you out a housing application form, once they approve your need for housing you will receive a letter, you can then take the letter to the Social Welfare office/Community welfare officer to discuss the possibility of rent allowance.

Its a bit of a Grey area from then on to be honest. I am hearing mixed reports that you have to first pay rent for 6 months before the allowance is given. I haven't made it that far but I am in need of housing and after my discussions with the Co Council they agreed I am in need of housing but I may find it difficult to receive rent allowance. I am fed up with how they allow those who have contributed all their lives to suffer yet you see those who contributed little to none obtain the benefits with ease.
The entire system is atrocious so be prepared.

Their is some regular posters here and they give great advice so give it some time and I am sure you will be given more detailed answers.

They may see you moving out as forfeiting a rent free situation, which they would not view favourably. You'd really have to make a good case for needing to move away from your parents' area for a better chance of finding work - moving to a bigger city with more job prospects for example.

I would not leave your parents house until you are sure you will get rent allowance or you are sure you can afford the rent on the jobseeker's payment alone.
