hand-brake problem

Lately Ive noticed that when I release the handbrake of the car before taking off, the brake takes about two seconds to release. Its like a delayed reaction. When you let up the clutch and press the accelerator, the brake is locked on and only releases when the car is in motion. I seem to notice it more when the reverse gear is selected and It seems to happen when the car is cold or hasnt been driven for a period of time. Anybody know the cause of this?

    Thanks in advance.

If you have drum brakes, it might be the drums are worn and the shoes are cutting into the sides of the drums and sticking.

    +1

On the other hand, it wouldn't happen to be an '05 or later Passat, would it?

had the same on my car. its was the handbrake cable seizing. Replaced the cable and it was fine

The car has disc brakes all around, they are slightly worn alright, Can a similiar problem be encountered with disc brakes?

And to answer Confab's question, it is a 00 Passat :D

I am not sure if you can get the same problem with disc brakes, maybe if the pistons are a bit sticky. If try you google passat forums theres a couple out there.

I have to agree with tin79 - it sounds like a cable problem to me.
