The members of Rathfarnham A.C. were deeply shocked and saddened today to hear of the death of our great friend Derek Furniss in the crash of the Air Corps plane in Co. Galway on Monday evening.

Derek joined us earlier in 2009 and quickly became a committed runner with us. He made rapid progress over the summer and ran two fine races within the past week or so. On Sunday 4th October 2009, in one of his first races, Derek ran our own 5km race in 16m 07s for 31st place. On Sunday 11th October 2009, the day before his untimely death, Derek finished in a fantastic 10th place in the Dublin Novice cross-country in the Phoenix Park. We know that he was absolutely thrilled to go home with a team silver medal.

Derek was a committed runner since he started and he quickly became a part of our running community and we understand that he really enjoyed being with us too. We will really miss him.

May Derek, and his colleague David Jevens, rest in peace.

I knew Derek from my time in the Air Corps. I taught him in class when he was a cadet. He was intelligent, hard-working and popular. He rose through the ranks to become an instructor at age 22! He was the chief instructor on the type of A/C that crashed. He clearly had some athletic talent. A great loss to the Air Corps and Rathfarnham AC.

RIP both men. Thoughts and prayers are with their families, colleagues and friends.

I think it would be appropriate for the Dublin County board to request a minute silence at the start of the leinster and national novice xc races later this year, seing as derek would have been a member of the dublin county team. RIP.
