Sorry but i'm new to all this. Ive just gone back to college as a mature student and am thinking of getting a netbook to use whilst at college. I have a laptop so don't need anything too high spec, will probably just be using it for word processing, spreadsheets and surfing.
Plus being a student money is an issue, is it really worth spending loads of money on one?? I've seen the cnmbook from Maplin at 150 - anygood?
I need it to be compatible with word2003 & 2007.
    Thanks

The beauty of having a netbook is that it's light and portable. If you don't want to be carrying a heavy laptop around college and you want something that you can take out wherever you are then the netbook is the right decision for you.

Bear in mind tho that it has limitations; it's not good for graphics intense applications ; that said, i've managed to do some basic photoshop on mine.

I was faced with the same question as you but I took the plunge and haven't looked back since.

    Hope that helps.

Remember you can usually find a good one second hand from the Dell outlet or adverts.ie

Do not buy that one in Maplin, it's woeful. The Samsung NC10 is highly regarded around these parts but that costs about 300~

That Asus EeePC 10050HA looks pretty sweet as well. I don't know how it compares with the NC10 but the specs and battery life look great. £269 on amazon (with free shipping nowadays).

That CnmBook in Maplin is a Windows CE machine. Basically its just a glorified organiser, I wouldn't recommend it.

Thanks for all the advice. just seen that the Asus one is on offer in Argos at the minute for 299euro.

Guess I'll have to save up a bit more!!

I have the Samsung NC10 and would recommend it highly. I run Picasa & Office 2007 on it and it handles it all. The other plus factor is the battery life which is excellent (make sure you go for the one with the larger battery capacity as Argos have done one in the past with a smaller battery).

Hi, can I join the discussion? My son has just begun college and needs a notebook or laptop for lectures. Given the amount of info presented to student he would have about 5 lever arch files if he were to print out everything given to date. I don't want to spend too much money (major issue) and he needs something v portable that can take the MS Office. Could I get some recommendations plse

I purchased the N140 Samsung on line from Powercity for e360 well worth paying the extra e60 for the chrome stripe around the edge. :p

Takes a while to get used of, default settings are not nice Ie magnification and sensitive touch pad. Takes a few days to customise and get used of. Long life battery is what I would look out for in the current range and Samsung have that advantage,

C'mere... do Amazon deliver to Ireland? They wouldn't send me a keyring or an iRiver, so why would they deliver a laptop?

Also, PC World - much as I like the actual shop - has a dreadful website. To browse netbooks you're directed to the UK site, which doesn't deliver to Ireland, and (I've been told by staff members) cannot be ordered in to PC World Ireland shops.

It's very bloody difficult to get a worthwhile netbook in this godforsaken country...

    Amazon Deliver to Ireland.

Check their site, they don't deliver some goods.
Look at all the review sites and they point you to the Samsung NC10 as the best netbook. Nip over the border and you can pick one up for £250. Do the months shopping while you're there and everyone is happy!
