Stephen Gately - Boyzone Documentary

I have been watching and listening to adds about the TV3 documentary since Sunday supposedly about Stephen Gately and Boyzone.

What a crock of S**t. They metioned poor Stephen at the start and the very end and bascially showed a documentary on Boyzone. Poor show from TV3, not as advetised. It looked like what it was, jumping on the bandwaggon instead of putting some effort in and taking their time they rushed and through this on.

What did you expect from TV3, most of their documentary are just news paper clips and you tube videos.

He died three days ago. A documentary takes months to make.

Did you really think they were going to have a full show on him prepared that quickly? I didnt see it, but I saw the promo for it and it was fairly clear that it was a 'history of Boyzone' show, hastily retitled to include Stephen Gately by name.

They could have done better than this. A documentary does not need to take months to make. It would have taken TV3 about the same time to put together a decent programme as they took to insert the quotes from the rest of Boyzone, onto this programme, about the sad death of Stephen.

Are you serious? Like I say, I didnt see it, but I have a good idea from the ad for it. I'm guessing that the format of the programme comprised of archive footage of Boyzone throughout their career, and this was interspersed with 'soundbites' from journalists and celebrities. From what you've said, it seems they give it a bit of an update, hastily adding a few quotes which alluded to Stephen's recent untimely death, probably at the start/end.

You think TV3 could have organised, filmed and edited all of the interviews with all journalists/celebrities etc, sourced and cleared the rights for all the old Boyzone music videos, concert stuff or whatever in this time? Basically a fully produced a 30min/60 min (not sure) show in less than 72 hours?

C'mon, we all know TV3's shortcomings but they're not miracle workers. :D

Yes I am serious. This show was an old show with edits.
They could have made a better show from edits and footage in as short a time.

TV3 are actually advertising a vacancy for an editing job at the moment, you should apply - show 'em how it's done ;)

;)You could tell them how to do the job without even having seen the programme so it is you who should go for it. They would never have seen such skill..;)

I'm not getting involved in a keyboard warrior battle, so I suppose we'll agree to differ on the matter. :D

Although I've nothing to do with TV3, I do have plenty of experience in that area, and even a tabloid TV3 style docu takes a long time to make - that's a fact, ask anyone who knows.

You are asking me, and I know, that TV3 could have edited and made a better programme than they did, in as short a time as it took them to add on a few quotes to an old programme.
So, I disagree that you know anything about how long it takes to make a docu after a sad event.

Do you have any experience making broadcast documentaries? If so, have you ever made one from start to finish in a few days? If so, fair enough, I'd actually be interested to see it if you want to send me a link/details via PM.

From my experience, it wouldn't happen. Like I said, we'll have to just agree to disagree and leave it there. No point clogging up boards, so this is my last post on the matter.

Why would you ask me to send you details on how to make a good programme by PM (private message)...you have not been involved in the making of any programme as has been evident by your remarks. You did not even see this programme, I did, and my main point was that TV3 should have done a better job of putting out a programme they said was about Stephen.

This is exactly my point, I may not have made myself clear in the first post. My main issue is that they have been advertising the S**t out of this previously aired documentary on radio and TV since Sunday and just showed an old documentary.

They just jumped on the bandwaggon in a cynical effort to raise some interest in TV3, Ratings and advertising revenue. I can see the meeting now "Stephen Gately just died..... I have a great idea...... lets throw on that documentary we showed last year and rename it.....I'll contact the advertisers....... brilliant idea!

I just want to clear up one misconception in this thread. This was NOT an old programme. I know the people who have been putting it together over the last few months and it was due to air within the next few weeks.

In light of the death of Gately they decided to air it on Tuesday and bookend it with tributes to the singer.

Some may see that as a cynical and opportunistic move - so be it.

But this particular documentary had NEVER been shown before. That is fact.

And a new programme could NOT have been put together from scratch in that amount of time. It was a struggle just to get the new beginning and end done before it went to air.

    Thanks for your opinion.
I STILL think that a better programme could have been made "in that amount of time"...as I have already explained in earlier posts to this thread.
To prove my point, UTV put out most of their programme "The Seven Thirty Show" (Thursday 15 October) to the sad topic of the early death of Stephen, with news reports, old footage of gigs and appearances, and interviews with people who knew him. It was a really nice effort on the part of UTV, and I, for one, appreciated it.

In light of the death of Stephen Gately TV3 could have waited for the schedule broadcast to provide a better scene of the Tragic death of one of the band members of Boyzone. This would have been a far better choice and a far more sensitive one.

I have to agree it was unlikely that TV3 could have produced a doc at such short notice. Even a populist news rehash, celebrity gushing and timelined (generally starting circa 1998) history that we are used to from TV3 in-house productions.

I think RTÉ could have shown some of their Boyzone interviews from the late late shows as they have done with other people who have died in the past year.

In general this thread and perhaps this post is out of line and touch with such a tragic death of some one so young.
