It was on TV3 that Shane Ryan is retiring from the Dublin football panel. Sad news for the All Star, who was put down the pecking order by the Dublin management, despite inferior players playing in his place.

It is not all bad news though. He has retired from football but has told Anthony Daly he is available for selection for the hurlers. From what I have heard, he is an excellent hurler. Footballs loss is hurlings gain.

I've posted this in the general Dublin thread. He was at a meeting of the hurling panel last night and I think he will be a great addition to Daly's panel.

Well unless he plays handball, joining the hurlers might be his best bet of an All Ireland!!!

Seriously though, a class hurler, definitely an addition to Daly's squad, although you'd have to say a bit of a loss for the football panel, despite his apparent position in the pecking order.

A real loss for Dublin football. He didn't get the playing time he deserved this year. I wish him all the best with the hurlers and hope he see's success with them Hope he changes his min though, he's a real fighter and I think he still has a lot to give to the footballers.

OK, I’m finally over the lesson we received from Kerry. Sad to see Ryan’er hanging up his football boots, don’t think he got a fair shake at it this year. Him being an All-star at midfield and getting a lousy ten mins in the Kerry mauling must have been the last straw for the lad. He always gave 100% and will be missed.

Shane should have done this a few years ago.

Its an awful pity his football stint ended the way it did. Shane was always very good to have out with the kids and I found him a very likeable fella. He is an excellent hurler and I sincerley hope he does well with the hurlers.

An excellent role model for any young player.

Hopefully Conal Keaney will follow Shane's actions. That would be a serious addition for us. Were back training in a few months so he will have to make up his mind.

IMO (and I am not having a dig here, just giving an honest opinion) it was a pity that he wasted the best years of his possible hurling career playing football.

I sincerely do hope he has a few years good hurling left in him. And as another poster said above, I hope Keaney follows him.

And David Henry. They could draw serious support to the hurling team which can only be good in the long run

Thanks for your efforts Shane.Sad to see the football career end in the fashion it did.You can walk away with your head held high, with Gilller still in charge Dublin football ain't gonna improve.Best of luck with the hurlers!

This is great news. Was treated very badly by the football management. Ryan has always been known as a better hurler than a footballer. Now if only Keaney and Connolly would follow, I think its this little bit of experience that the hurlers need to get them over the finish line. I think it also shows that the tide is turning in Dublin where hurling is now pushing Football for top spot. Cant wait for 2010 hurling season now. :D

jaysus, some shift in power happening between football and hurling aint there?

It was a pity to see Ryan and a few others drop the hurling for football but I guess it was the right decision at the time. Hope he can make it back and earn a spot with the squad.

Don't think Keaney will commit either way til 'boden are knocked out of the club.

Ryan, Keaney, Connolly and Henry would all add a lot to the Dublin hurlers - but not really experience-wise. They're super hurlers but they've a lot less intercounty experience than Fallon, Hiney, O'Callaghan, Carton, even McCrabbe.

Main point though is that Shane Ryan will be a useful addition to the squad and if we get one or two more back, all the better.

    good for him

A sad day. He was a superb player, who had a versatile nature, playing in all positions from corner back, to half forward.

However, if the likes of Keaney, and Connolly were to change codes, I wouldnt be too disapointed.

Delighted for the hurlers. i have no respect for the dublin management team in the way they treated this guy. In regard to Dermot Connolly i saw him play for vinnies hurlers in the championship and going on that form i would not let him near the hurling panel.

It would be great to see Keaney going back to hurling aswell. I don't think he brought enough to the footballers over the last few years, but could be a great addition to the hurlers. He's strong so there would be a good balance with him as potentially full forward and the smaller, faster players like Rushe and O'Callaghan in corner forward.

Shane Ryan was definetly mistreated by the football management. A great boost for the hurlers but i don't think he will walk into the team. The squad is getting stronger so he'll have to work hard to earn a place on the team.

Yes you have to wonder why someone who got an all star in 08 didnt figure the year after in Gilroys plans. I initially thought having Whelo and Ryan on bench would strengthen the bench but it didnt work out that way.

Agree with you 100% on this. Its one of the reasons I didnt start hammering at Pat Gilroy early in the year. Here we had new lads like Paddy Andrews, Alan Hubbard being given a lash and we had Whelan, Ryan and Cullen on the bench. It could only be good for the panel. How he left Ryan off for so long in the game against Kerry is beyond me.

I really hope Shane, one of the nice guys does well with the hurlers.

To be fair Shane got a good run in the team. Thinks it time to inject new blood into the side.
McAuley had a good enough game yesterday in midfield but he does drift out of position like O Sullivan occasionally

Yea i actually thought Gilroy had it right. There were players for Dublin who thought their position was guaranteed and took their place for granted to an extent. So playing other players reminded them they'd have to work harder.

However, having got the desired reaction from players like Whelan and Ryan it was a big mistake to drop them. The amount of football Ryan got this year after his fully-deserved All Star last year was ridiculous.

yes always wondered what was Shane Ryans best position. Started out as a wing back and then moved to midfield.
Very strong going forward but my only criticism is that he tended to run in straight lines but his engine was incredible.
Having watched highlights of Dublin SFC final; last night is it now time to give O Mahony one last chance in midfield.
Know a lot of people are making a case for McAuley but I think Dec O has been very good with his distribution.

Problem was, it wasnt the likes of Whelan and Ryan. The likes of Connolly, Keaney, and Bastick were allowed become complacent. Particularly the likes of Keaney were "undroppable", even though, they should have been moved around on several occasions. The scapegoats over the past number of years were Casey, and Moran, who were not nearly as poor as the public thought.

In retrospect, the decision to drop Ryan and Whelan for McConell, and McGee was a sackable offence. Its not as though the panel had a Seamus Scanlon on the park. In fact, McGee has been indifferent to county football for years, while McConnell is a hopeless case, who along with Connolly, Bastick, and Hubbard, should never see an inter county game again, save from the stands. If Eamonn Fennell was available, and selected, that may have been a different kettle of fish. As a result of his folly, Gilroy has lost both his experienced center mids, and Fennell is still on the sidelines.
