Hi,

I am a student doing my final year project and one element of it is where people upload videos to a youtube-esque site

Can anyone tell me how I could complete this?
Or does anyone know how youtube works..with regards to the video software itself.

So what exactly are you doing? Do you need to make a website or what? Youtube is run by a PHP Script like http://www.phpmotion.com/ and http://www.videoscript.us/ . You have to pay for them but I can get them for you *ahem* free.
Or do you need to know how it works or do you just have to upload some videos?
I could make and design a site for you but it wouldn't be free, but of course it wouldn't be dear either

Thanks for the fast response.
I am developing and online filmmaking network for my fyp.
One element will be a site where the users upload videos to to and can comment and rate/vote on certain areas which I will define.

I basically need to know how to put the whole things together,
what programming is involved, video player development, what kind of database is necessary and how to construct it, and anything else that goes into creating a like that.

As for the website. I appreciate the offer but I will be developing it myself as part of the project.

Any insight that you can give to this would be greatly appreciated.

And you would be sure to get credited in my dissertation.

I'm not a programmer so I couldn't tell you how it works, I'm a designer really. I just use the scripts and design around them, but I'm sure if you went onto one of the sites above or maybe a video site or script site you could probably get more info on that.


A couple of things I can tell you are that most of the players are in Flash,
you will always need a database that supports PHP, at least 4.1, but normally higher and you need a MYSQL database server.

There are a few other requirements for a basic site. There is a lot of work creating a video sharing site, a lot of that is design because there are a lot of elements on the website and hundreds of different pages you need to design.
You would more than likely need Illustrator,Photoshop and Flash, but you could get away with GIMP instead of PS or else hire a designer.

I''m going to assume you know all about getting hosting and a domain, uploading to the server etc.(unless you have your own server).

A few video script sites offer one-click installation but if you're using your own server it takes a while to set up.

Your best bet is to get a premade script or get someone on a freelance site (getafreelancer.com or rent-a-coder.com) to code you a custom script. You would also probably need a designer if you're not good with graphic design.

Thats all I can think of at the moment oh and Kanye West "Graduation" :P
