Won't happen, no need to say this is another example of "sequels, reboots etc" when nothing has been announced. Emmerich is promoting 2012 (not a sequel or a reboot) and was asked about a sequel to iD4. I don't think this will happen because it NEEDS Will Smith and Will has a production company now and will likely only makes money under that banner where he has a more active role in its development. Also the first film launched Smith's career and he's probably the biggest star in the world right now so 1. Can Fox afford him, when he clearly would want a % of the movies gross and 2. What does Smith have to gain artistically in returning to this role, he probably has more to lose than gain if it tarnishes memories of the original

If Fox are nuts enough to make it without Smith, it'll get made. But I don't see it happening

I think the biggest problem would be following the "Today... is our Independence Day!" speech.

Unless the aliens just happen to invade on the 4th of July again, in which case they'd have a speech handy. It might be fun to have them invade a week or two later.

Don't see why it would need Will Smith - or Jeff Goldblum... If anything it might be better without them... Like their story's been told, but the aliens are the real stars of the series. (With aliens wiping out most of the world there are other important things happening than just the tale of David and Steve)

I always thought a good sequel would be set on Earth... The aftermath of the alien invasion (remember all the major cities and militaries have been wiped out) caused world-wide anarchy. But there is a growing fascist movement which is gaining popularity but with an evil inner circle... with access to left-over nukes, and technology from downed alien ships... (Maybe they stage another alien invasion to unite the world behind them using the left-over fighters) I suppose it's been done though...

Call it "Dependence Day" or something
