    Hi all,

My girlfriend had a fairly serious operation last week. Before the operation they took blood as normal for tests. Now her period is 5 days late but the thing is we had sex a few weeks back and stupidly I came inside her, its the first time we done this.

Now shes 5 days late for her period and i'm worried sick but she says there's nothing to worry about that the blood tests for her operation would have shown she was pregnant, is this accurate?

    Thanks in advance.

The only way to be certain is to go to a pharmacy and buy a pregnancy test.

Unprotected sex has a nasty habit of causing pregnancy.

Serious surgery is likely to have knocked her cycle out of whack - but I'd still get tested.

Get a test in the chemist.

Its possible the operation (anesthetic) messed up her cycle though.

Hey Just thought, if she is 5 days late then she was due last Thursday right?

When did she have this operation? I dont think they would randomly test for pregnancy in her blood but maybe they would. Anyway if they tested her before her period was due its unlikely enough HCG would show up in her blood to show a pregnancy.

So she still needs the test

    Hi there,

I had a pretty serious operation last month (had my gallbladder removed to be precise) and afterwards my cycle was out of whack for the first time ever.
Before I went in for the op, they specifically asked if there was any chance that I could be pregnant, and to be very sure I wasn't, I said that there was and they tested me. So when I was late I knew there was no chance I was pregnant.

So if they did a test most likely theres nothing to be worried about...

Hope your girlfriend is ok :)

High stress can interrupt the menstrual cycle. Actually pregnant mothers in some species can pause the development of the fetus altogether if conditions arent meant (extreme heat, drought, malnutrition, etc). Kangaroos do this (and yes ive been watching Planet Earth, its a sunday ritual) Its possible thats all it is, depending on the surgery. Still, no point in not getting tested.

For your own peace of mind it mightn't do any harm for her to take the test, but I'm just over swine flu and it threw my cycle right out! I was on antibiotics earlier in the year and I was nearly seven weeks late! I freaked both times but of course I'm fine! Chances are it's the operation that has messed with her system. Best of luck!

definately do a test, it's likely that it could be the op that caused it, but it is also likely that she could be pregnant...seeing as you had unprotected sex a couple weeks before her period was due (so she'd probably of been ovulating around that point...making pregnancy more likely)
i dont know if the doctors would have tested for pregnancy, that is usually something they have to test for on it's own, whether they do that before an op i dont know. if they did test it though it's very likely they would have gotton enough hormone to test from...seeing as the op was a few days before she was due?

but yeah...get a test done ASAFP :) and dont have unprotected sex again unless you want a baby

im really sorry about your problem...
i totally understand that your freaking out...
i myself am over 2weeks late... never happened in my life before.... was freaking out...
didnt know what to do... i finally worked up the courage to go to a doc... took 1 test it was negative... doc then said she would take bloods to be double sure... and get this... they lost my blood results!!!!!!!!!!! like who does that... i was majorly in panic at this stage... then had to go back and take another pregnancy test... which again was netative.. to my delight.. i am not awaiting blood test to tell me if ive a hormone embalance, or perhaps it was down to stress... (this all happened within the last 10days)

defo tell your girlfreidn to take a test and if she doesnt have the courage to buy one, go to a doctor, when i went they were nothing but helpful

    best of luck hun

    :)

    Hi all,

Just want to say thanks for all the replies, some good advice and kind words.

My girlfriend got her period yesterday finally after 8 days, she took a test which was negative but it was still a bit nerve racking. So relieved she's not pregnant.

I've definatly learned my lesson anyway, I won't be letting this happen again.

Anyway thanks again for all the replies and support!! :)
