Working at Home, Dublin City Council Rates

    Hello,

I'm setting up a ltd company, will be working from home for a few months prior to moving to more suitable premises.

Will I need to pay Dublin City Council rates? And how much would they be?

I'm guessing based on this from the DCC website that it would be quite small:

If you have a premises that is being used for both domestic and commercial purposes, you may be entitled to a ‘Mixed–Domestic’ allowance.

The allowance is equal to one-third of the rateable valuation of your property up to a maximum of €22.86 - whichever is the smallest.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

If this is you sitting in front of the computer / phone and nothing else, they aren't interested. If you have visitors coming and going and are holding stock, then its another matter, not just for rates, but also insurance and if you live in an apartment your management company.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

It would be a case of just me and a computer. How do I let them know this so they wont be interested?

No need to let them know - it not a commercial premises and therefore commercial rates do not apply.

On a planning issue, there's no problem either as you are permited to work from home as long as your business is not open to the public.

Many accountants, barristers, sales reps, IT specialists etc etc work from home without any difficulty.

If you are holding small amounts of stock at home, but selling purely over the web (no business related visitors), is there likely to be a rates issue?
