Software recommendation for Powerbook G4 867 MHz

    Hi,

I recently resurrected an old 12" Powerbook G4. It is 867 MHz and has 640Mb of RAM. It came with OS X 10.2 but I now have 10.3.9 and also Debian Linux installed. I now have a 60 Mb hard disk.

I am, however, getting frustrated by the amount of software which will not run. The latest versions of Firefox, Safari, iTunes, Adobe Reader, Flash and many others will not work.

The laptop does run well, however. Should I upgrade, and if so, to what? I can get 10.4 (Tiger) and 10.5 (Leopard) on eBay. Has anyone got experience of running either of these OSes on a Summer 2003 Powerbook?

I wouldn't go beyond 10.3.9. If you want a reasonably responsive system on this PowerBook don't even think about running up to date bloatware. With sufficiently old (or lightweight) applications it will still serve you well.

You can also upgrade the RAM, I think you can go up to 1GB with two appropriate modules.

My 12" PB is a 1 Ghz G4 with 512MB of RAM and it ,runs Tiger with no noticeable issues. Granted, I don't run it daily but anytime I have it on, 10.4 doesn't cause any hassle.

I know of a publishing company whose editorial staff use G4s running Tiger (Computer specs: 733MHz/867MHz/dual 800MHz G4, 1GB RAM, 72GB HD). The systems run the MS Office 2004 and Adobe CS2 suites of software without any difficulties. NeoOffice is terrible on the systems.

12" powerbook, 10.4 no problemo... Even take it recording up to 24 tracks of audio live with an external drive. I have a Gig in it even though they say you aren't meant to. I think it was turned off last January, been going strong since.

Of course you could just trash the whole operating system and just leave Linux on it. Though even with Linux it's getting a bit dated.
