"Belgian dies on holiday in Senegal
Frank Vandenbroucke has died. The 34-year-old Belgian cyclist was on holiday in Senegal. Early reports indicate that he died of a blood clot.
Vandenbroucke was out of contract yet looking for a team for next year.
Vandenbroucke turned pro in 1994 with Lotto and won an epic Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 1999.
However his career was not without controversy. He was questioned by police for drunk driving and possession of doping products and despite numerous comebacks he never reached the heights of 1999.
Cyclingnews would like to offer its condolences to his family and friends."

    RIP

This is really sad news. One of the most talented cyclists in the last 10 years but always had his personal demons. RIP

That's really sad news. He provided some of the most thrilling moments in recent times. His win at Liege - Bastogne - Liege was something else, announcing to TV interviewers beforehand just where he would attack and then did exactly what he said he would do. His win into Avila in the Vuelta that year was fantastic as well, riding almost everyone off his wheel on the Navamoral and then attacking the rest of them.

Can't use search function but am I right in thinking you were considering writing a book about him El Tonto?

Have been considering it, yes. Bit of a pipe dream at the moment. Finding the time and a publisher would be a challenge, not to mention that most of the source material and interviews needed would be in Flemish.
