How to stop people talking?

Has anyone found teachers and lecturers tend to continue talking after they've made their point (one on one basis or in a small group) and it's rather hard to convey that you've understood and you have to be going clear enough for them to get it.

I was asking a lectuer something recently afterwards, something basic which he explained in the first few seconds but he kept elaborating needlessly even after i clearly thanked him, summarized shortly for him what he was trying to say and edged closer and closer to the door repeating through out "yes i understand, thank you very much for explaining etc" (not without first hearing him out and paying him due respect). This isn't just the one lecturer. I've had the same problem a number of times just since starting college and nearly all of my teachers in secondary school. Has anyone else noticed this and dealt with it in any ways.

I've never had this problem with other people before (but as i look back I've had it with a strangely high amount of teachers throughout the years) . After a particular situation, some friends outside class commented that he really didn't want to stop talking so it's not that i'm overly critical of people.

Look basicly i want to be respectful but i want them to take a hint. And it seems at times i can't be more obvious and they seem oblivious. So how do i do it?
