Am I being ripped off for new break pads?

    Hey,

Just had a call from the garage thats servicing my citroen c3.
They said the break pads in the front are virtually completely worn away, and that they wouldnt pass the NCT.

From what I understood of what they said, the thing the break pad is attached to needs replacing too, and they have quoted me €250 to replace them.

Ive never noticed any problem with the breaks, and Im worried that i'm being over charged, or else that the job doesnt need doing.

    Any advice???

The NCT don't care how long is left in your brake pads as long as they are still working effectively.

€250 for brake pads is too much, for brake pads and discs is a bit too much. For calipers and pads it's an alright price, but I would question anything other than pads.

How old is the car? Mileage?

2003 c3, the millage is around 90,000 km, I bought it about 6 months ago, and im in the car all day every day so its gone up from 74,000km since then.

they said that the NCT will pass on the mechanical test, but when they look through the wheels they will see they're worn away and fail it.

Not sure if they said calipers or discs.

    Discs so??

New discs can be got for 38 euro each from MicksGarage.ie , Brake pads are €35 euro for the set,Your local motor factors would be cheaper. It shouldn't take any more than an hour's labour to fit them.

if it is callipers am I being ripped off?

They were due to start the work this afternoon, so there's nothing I can do re: the price if they've already done the work, is there?

Also, they wouldnt just say they needed replacing if they didnt, would they?

if your pads were worn down to nothing, your discs are likely to be damaged as a result.... metal to metal contact. Garage labour is approx €80/hour.
Shouldn't have any problems with calipers at all.
If you go to a main dealers for servicing expect to pay a lot more than your neighbourly quailfied mechanic. €250 bill from a dealers (if that's who's doing repairs) is reasonable as main dealers go. Much cheaper to buy the parts yourself and find local competent mechanic to fit them. hope you get sorted one way or the other.
