    Hey all.

Got a new Acer Aspire 6930G there about six months or so ago. Very nice spec, 2Ghz, 250GB hard drive, Vista, etc.

Anyways, trying to run some older games on it and its playing them super slow. For example, Broken Sword and Dungeon Keeper 2. Both have been put into compatability mode for Win 95 and 98 respectively, but once the games starts, it CRAWLS.

Any idea why this should be?? I was able to run Broken Sword through the SCUMM program and it had no issues (other than no speech, but thats a SCUMM thing) so why is it so laggy with Windows?

Maybe its a graphic card driver issue?

i never got dungeon keeper 2 to work properly at all under vista, and tried it in different compatibility modes etc.
One thing that I would recommend in general for playing games on a vista system is to make a script to turn off a lot of the services while you're playing. You can google for how to do this. There are a lot of services running by default under vista, a large number of which can probably be turned off at least while a game is running.

Despite there being a "compatibility" mode in vista, experience has shown that i just doesn't work a lot of the time. I struggled to get old games to work on vista, and even when i did, they were incredibly unstable. I doubt it's a hardware issue seeing the games, i'd say it's simply vista, i'd say 7 would have the same trouble tbh.

Yep I couldn't get Dungeon Keeper 2 to work properly with W7 either.

Eh sorry now if this seems a bit silly ...but...is it plugged in? -because most modern laptops default to half or lower speed ("Speedstep") when on battery power ...rubbish I know ...It cant be disabled on Sonys...

Even if that was happening, the above games require absolutely nothing to run them...

Just as an update, I gave Dungeon Keeper another shot, and got it working!! For me, it took changing the Compatibility Mode to Windows Server 2003 (random, I know!) and running it in 640 x 800 resolution. Also important is to turn off the Hardware Acceleration in the Graphics Options menu in the game. The menu may still be all blocky but the game and menu will work fine after.

    Best of luck!
