Problem Downloading from Microsoft Only

Have a problem downloading updates/new downloads from Microsoft only. I can download from any other site, and my internet connection is working fine. However, whenever I try to download something from the Microsoft site it gives me an "internet connection unavailable" message. (That screen that comes up when your broadband is down or shut off... even though I have other tabs open and running the web in the same browser!)

I think it maybe some sort of viurs or malwear (hence my posting in this thread) but my anti virus (Avast!) can't find anything. I also tried running the series of checks out lined in the sticky at the top of the forum but of course when it gets to the stage requiring Microsoft Updates, I come to a halt since this is the problem.

A friend also suggested that I may have at some stage clicked something that told my computer not to trust any downloads from Microsoft, but can't find any option to undo this, if in fact I did. I've downloaded updates and a new internet explorer from other computers onto a memeory stick and run them on my computer, but this hasn't solved the problem.

    So, any ideas?
    Thanks for listening!

    hi

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**
    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
      • Tools->Options->Main tab
      • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

      CF_download_FF.gif

      CF_download_rename.gif

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

      • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
      • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      • Close any open browsers.
      • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
      • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
      • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    7. Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
    8. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    9. Please post the "C:\Combo-Fix.txt" for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

First of all thanks for your reply.
Downloaded and ran Combo-Fix as you suggested.

Anyway, once Combo-Fix had finished, I restarted my computer and turned back on my firewall and anti-virus. Avast ran a scan, then suggested I run a Boot scan, so did that and it found five Trojans, which I deleted as they came up. (I had run a boot scan earlier and it didn't detect anything... Could these have been in the Combo-Fix files I downloaded??)

Once this had completed I tried to update Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials... But they're still not updating. I get a messege to ensure my internet connection is working. It is since I'm back here posting this!

Any other advice on what I may be doing wrong?? Thanks again.

    Hi again.

Seems that last post may have been a little hasty. Seems to be working now! Thanks for your help.
