Check local car breakers would be cheapest option, also riskiest.
Have a mechanic check it out and also give you a quote for the swap job before anything else.

Give www.traynors.co.uk a ring, they are a massive scrap dealer up North and deliver down South. Just remember that the Astra is sold as Vauxhall up there, engines should be the same though.

A mechanic did check it out and quoted us about €1500 for a second hand engine and €1500 to fit it. Thanks, but no thanks.

Car is only worth €4.5K max.

    I'll check out traynors, thanks.

its not my car, its my partners but i was driving at the time. wanna try and get it fixed tho cos i was driving it when it happened.

Nothing you could do when driving it would have caused the belt to snap... not getting it changed on time did the damage not you! Fair play for you to paying for it!

What year is your Astra and what size engine are you looking for.

well I did crash it twice before that so I feel bad.

Got quote for €1350 supplied and fitted with IVI.

    Its a 2002 1.4

    Engine is a Z14XE

Are the pistons damaged aswell? If they were ok you might be able to just replace the head alone.

€1,350 is more like it. The guy who quoted you €1,500 for a new engine and another €1,500 to drop it in is having a laugh I reckon. €1,500 may not be too bad for a good clean low mileage engine but €1,500 to fit it is just extortion.

I'm not so sure if modern 16 valve engines are generally economical to rebuild if the timing belt snaps or slips. I had a mechanic tell me once that he rebuilt a mondeo 16 valve engine after the timing belt snapping and he would never be inclined to again. Most if not all the valves were bent and needed to be replaced. At €60 a pop per valve thats a lot of bananas for 16 of them and still more components needed to be replaced in the engine after that. I believe that generally speaking components are closer together in a 16 valve engine than an 8 valve and hence there is likely to be more damage done as result of a timing belt slipping or snapping. Of course there will be exceptions to this rule on both sides I'm sure. Perhaps in rarer or newer model a rebuild might be the most vaible option but I would imagine the Astra would be plentiful enough in breakers yards.

If going through with the engine replacement OP I would also suggest that you take components such as ignition coil, egr valve, power steering pump, starter motor if supplied with new engine and other parts of the old one before scrapping. You never know when you may need one of these parts.

    cheers for all that info.

will IVI take them parts off for me and give them back? thought they would just keep them for themselves

I wouldn't be familiar with IVI engines myself T-rev as have never used them and not from next or near Dublin but I would imagine if they were anyway half decent they would have no problems taking them of and putting them in the boot for you. They would probably scrap your old engine without taking any parts off anyway I'd be thinking. If the car is not driving and you are getting it towed to garage it would not even be severly difficult to take them off yourself if you had the tools or a friend who has and knows even a small bit about cars. In any event the parts I mention would take the garage a very short few minutes to take off and other parts they would maybe be taking off anyway to fo job if new engine comes with them.

If they agree which I'd be surprised if they didn't and they are a reasonable size establishment it might be an idea to leave a note in the car when leaving it in, in case somebody else other than you spoke to is doing the job or message does not get delivered.
