Am i doing it right..

    Howdy..

    I'm only new to the astronomy game, so forgive the nooby questions.

    When i was looking at Jupiter the other night (bright object to the south/south east), i noticed 3 bright dots to the right of it, and 1 to the left. They all seemed to be in a perfect alignment. Would i be correct in presuming these are Jupiters moons?.

    Also i have been scanning the Cassiopeia area of the sky the last few nights, there is some incredible views on a good night.

    Would anyone recommend other good objects of interest around this time of the year?.

    Yup, they're the moons! There's also plenty other planets to observe such as Venus and Mars, if you're willing to stay up long enough to have a look at them though.

    There's loads (1000s) in the night sky out there to observe, a good place to start is this thread (click here). Also, you can download a great astronomy program called Stellarium which simulates the night sky, shows a lot (you can download more star catalogues if you want them, it's all free). I would highly recommend it for looking for things in the night sky, it simulates the sky so you know the position of these things aswell. Stellarium website.

    Another great website for things like satellite (including the International Space Station (ISS) is http://www.heavens-above.com
    Heavens-Above also has sky maps (although I prefer Stellarium).
