    Hi
Im thinking of buying a VW golf 2000 its a tdi with 184,000 but has a full service history. However it has a 6 speed gearbox. Dose anybody have any experience with these are they more troublesome that normal gearbox or do they usually fail in a golf of this age and mileage.

    All advice would be appreciated

Dont have specific experience, but have used VAG 6speeds before.
Test drive it. If the gearing is very hard to get into (especially 2nd) when cold or excessively knotchy, grindy then it likely is on its last legs.
Presumably the clutch itself has had a couple of replacements but the gearbox could possibly be from new (and even with the same Gearbox Fluid). Changing the fluid would likely help, but its no miracle cure.

6 speed vag box is know to have selector fork problems, they can go at 60k or 160k, luck of the draw. It's as cheap to fit a recon box if they go. Budget for a new clutch kit and dual mass flywheel if it does go as it would be easy to get it all done at once.
