When flying to the states with say Virgin and Aer Lingus (Dublin to London), does the overall baggage allowance default to the Aer Lingus one? In other words can I use Virgins baggage allowance for the shorter Aer Lingus part of the trip? Cheers

I think you have to follow both airlines allowances

If it's booked on the one ticket AND Aer Lingus have an agreement with the connecting airline, then it will be the connecting airline's limit that is enforced.

    Thanks.

Has anyone recent experience with Aer Lingus regarding this? They are getting more strict these days, and although I would like to take 2 checked bags as per Virgins allowance, dont want to get caught out on the Aerlingus leg.

As said, if it's on the one ticket the greater allowance applies.

This isn't specifically an Aer Lingus/Virgin issue - it's a industry standard, and nothing Aer Lingus staff at Dublin would be surprised about. They handle it many times a day.

we flew to the middle east with BA earlier this year, BA share the dublin-london flight with aerlingus but as we had bought with BA we had the total baggage allowance and were able to check our bags the whole way without worry of being over weight.
if you booked your tickets separately then you will have to use the aerlingus allowance until you get to london unfortunately.
