Title sorta speaks for itself really. I mean, i always see poster about their event and saw them trying to get everyone that walked past to sign up on C&S day, but i'm at a loss when it comes to what they're all about. with ones like drama, dance, game etc their name says it all, but entrepreneurial and social soc isn't a big help. anyone know?

I don't think anyone could argue that you might as well drop Entrepreneurial from the title for a good description of what E&S do.

Basically it's a society whose main aims are to socialise, which is ridiculous since that is the primary goal of every society first and foremost. If it was the Entrepreneurial soc then that'd be fine, but "social soc" gives them a very very broad spectrum of what they can run (which is evident in the types of events they actually do run) which sort of defeats the whole purpose of having a variety of different socs imo.

In all fairness, every society is a "social" society. Do games soc members come to events and hide behind blankets and not talk to each other?

E&S is basically a drinking society, that advertises the fact that they do events bigger and better than X soc, where X is the society specifically set up to do said events, dressed up to look like an actual society.

poor old E&S, In all fairness they do and have run entrepreneurial events........

however, there is a feeling of "bigger is better with them"...... but isnt bigger GENERALLY better!! i mean random trips to european city.... if thats what your into, then thats quality!

Like to mention now that i am not, or never was a member!

Yes thats what I said, being social is the primary goal of every soc.

What I'm saying is that being a "social soc" is a pathetic excuse to exsist since every society aims to be social BUT the big difference is they arrange social events around their specific activites, so gamessoc meetup and play games, drama produce plays, artsoc get together and do various art projects etc etc.

E&S just seem to do whatever they feel like. Does the mystery trip have anything to do with being Entreprenurial? Does the Iron stomach have anything to do with being Entreprenurial? I'm sure they do run Entreprenurial events but lets be honest, people are just joining up for these big once-off events and for the discount card, which is what E&S is known for. But I would be interested to see a full list of events from last year to see how many entreprenurial events they actually ran, I'd be confident saying there would be considerably less Entreprenurial events than anything else.

See what I'm saying is their reason for existence is vague at best, it just seems they really arent focused on being an entreprenurial society and are just there to be a social society, which is just lazy.

Not to keep running to E&S help here, but I would have to disagree that they are "lazy", the size and frequency of their events would take hard work to arrange and run.

And the reason for their existence is quite clear, socialising!! Poker society’s main objective is to play poker, as games soc is to play games..... E&S is to socialize with no strings attached (some people want that)......as for entrepreneurial, well! While they do hold entrepreneurial events, I have a feeling that if they had approached the SPC requesting the set up of “the socialising society” they would have told them to feck off.

However, I would also say that it is quite a shallow society with no real loyalty or continuous participation among most of its members, but none the less, it's a society that students want and join, otherwise, why such large membership!

My problem is, they seem to get better treatment within DCU, at least they didn’t have their own TENT this year!!!!! Or did they?? Didn’t see one anyway!!

I totally agree, they put a lot of effort into what they run. I just think they were lazy when it came to the goals and aims of their society.

Just that wanting to have a social soc isn't enough of a mandate and as you said would have been shot down by the SPC, so them being business students they went with being an entrepreneurial and social soc to get around it... it's obvious since they don't market themselves as being an entrepreneurs society, leading to questions like this.

    D4-heads tbh.

But I'm going to say that the discount cards they offer and excessive corporate whoring is a big factor in the size of their membership.

They sort all that out themselves, anyone can correct me on this but afaik they receive fairly little SPC funding. It's the sponsorship machine they have going for themselves.

They are called E&S (Entrepreneurial & Social) because they get a very large grant from the college just to have Entrepreneurial in their name. They run about one entrepreneurial event every year (last year was a talk from Bill Cullen) and thats it. They blow the rest of the money on social events.

Ha someone I know asked this once to a committee memeber and was told "eh it's pretty self explanatory"! Ah yes the letters e and s explain everything....? even the full title isn't self explanatory

Jeez, college is a great time to enjoy yourself and have fun before you dive into the mean real world. And e&s provides a great outlet for this with the type of events they organize. Whats with all the negative Neds around here!?:p

The tale of origin that I've heard is that initially they wanted to call themselves simply "The Soc", and only stuck on the E&S stuff after they realised that this wasn't allowed by the SPC.

Ostensibly it's a business and party society and to be fair, they have ran a few business talks and competitions in the past, as well as the more obvious purely social events, but they do seem to be possessed of a little arrogance and self-superiority at times with some of their actions. There has also been plenty of suspicion regarding their financiers and the influence of certain brand names on their activities, but I'm pretty sure they've been audited and come out clean.

As much as I may personally resent their whole ethos, I do have a healthy respect for their initiative and effort. They've really shaken up the whole clubs and socs scene since their inception and definitely raised the bar for society advertising and recruitment methods.

They're a society whose whole purpose is to make a huge mess, piss everyone off and then not clean up after themselves.

Two years ago I was directing a play in the Venue. I had the Venue booked all day, but was only using it in the evening, so Max from E&S contacted me and asked if they could borrow it for the morning. I said it was okay as long as they cleaned up after themselves and left the stage set up like it was when they got there.

Anyway, I came back in the evening to find red bull cans everywhere, the stage completely messed up, and various props from backstage missing or broken. I called Max to ask what the **** was going on and he mumbled some half-assed excuse along the lines of "Oh, yeah... It must have been the lads... I wasn't there. It's not my fault."

After a bit more pestering he told me that they never saw any props backstage and someone else must have done it (despite the fact I was in the Venue just before they entered and again just after they left). So, the moral is, either E&S are utter twats or they're being framed by some Venue ghost.

well it sort of helps that they've got a dedicated promotions team....at least theve realized that posters need to be stamped to be put up !
