Do they do power also ?

This may be true if you don't have Bord Gais as a gas supplier, but if you do it may work out cheaper to stick with Bord Gais for both (think it gets you an extra 2% off electricity). I'm useless at maths but this bargain alert still seems better even losing the 2% discount. Anyone care to work it out?:o

can only be good news for the consumer, hopefully a 3rd company will get involved and spark a mini price war

They are far more expensive than bord gais for existing customers so what are they going to do for them?

Not really. If this is your first signup, you are likely to have to pay a deposit anyway by any operator.

Bord Gais discount to ESB prices on electricity is 14% if you also pay for your gas with them. Bord Gais maximum discount to ESB prices without buying gas from them also is 12% Airtricity give you 13% discount to ESB standalone

Therefore the cheapest combined Gas and Electricity will be Airtricity for Electricity (saving 13% vs ESB) and Flogas for Gas (saving 9% on Gas).

According to this report (http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/idojidqlid/), average prices for Electricity and Gas are both around €800 per annum.

    1. Keeping with tradition (ESB for Electricity, Bord Gais for gas) costs €1600 per year
    2. Swithing to Bord Gais for both - €1488 per annum (14% saving on Electricity only)
    3. Swithcing to Airtricity and Flogas - €1424 per annum (13% on Elctricity, 9% on gas)

So any catches? I cant spot any at first glance.

Or is it free money like switching from ESB on the electricity side?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,225 ✭✭✭Scruff

anybody done this switch for the gas? Considering the hullabaloo when people, including me, switched electricity supplier from ESB to Bord Gais i'm surprised there isnt as much of an impetuous behind it.

I did this today and they said there was a €300 security deposit but that they will waive it if I pay by direct debit so I am. I'm only doing this so I can switch to Bord Gais then as the guy in Bord Gais told me that I may be without electricity for awhile if I don't go to ESB first.

Thanks ! I have been meaning to do the maths on this today to see the average savings. You saved me a lot of time and a sore head !

Would it not be best to get electrictity from Bord gais(14% saving) and Gas from Flogas(9% saving)?

iirc 2% of the 14% discount BG offer is based on you being an existing customer for gas which you would presumably no longer be entitled to if you switched your gas supplier to Flogas ? If so then the Airtricity/Flogas combination would be slightly better value.

I switched about 1 year ago to Bord Gais for my electricity and their 14% cheaper than ESB is only for 1 year, after which its "at least 5% below ESB". Its quite the small print and was not aware of this till last week. So there are probably many in the same boat as me.

I was gonna change to Airtricity this week, and looking now I'll be switching my gas to flogas too :)

    Nice one!

Yes, I had a rep from Airtricity canvassing door to door. He said the same thing about Bord Gais Electricity customers reverting to a higher rate. Apparently Airtricity will hold this lower rate for much longer.

One other thing that he mentioned was that Airtricity will be selling Gas at a reduced price in the near future too. ;)

I switched from ESB to BG for electricity. And ow we just moved from BG to Flowgas for Gas.

So now im thinking would it be better to switch to airtricity for electricity

    Bingo.
Hope this is still the case, I'm flicking around various websites trying to verify it.

Only thought to search for different gas providers because they are trying to charge me a €200 deposit, I've been a customer previously and all bills were paid by direct debit, however they gave me some spiel about it being 14 months ago so it 'doesn't count'.

Hopefully Flogas and Airtricity won't expect deposits.

I see Airtricity are now in the Gas market - 4.017 unit cost vs 3.971 for Flogas.
Is this difference negligible for the price of having to deal with two companies?

Flogas website is pretty brutal, they should sort it out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,772 ✭✭✭bazwaldo

I'm with BG for both and would prefer now to switch to someone cheaper. I'm on the 2nd year 10% discount on electricity.

Two options: a)Airtricity for both b)go with Flogas for gas and stick with BG for lecky

Option a) is cheaper but I just don't trust Airtricity. Too many people on here giving out about their customer services. Don't think I ever called BG or ESB CS ever so maybe that doesn't matter. And their salesmen at the door which seem to call ever 2 weeks are full of crap.

You're right about Flogas's site, its brutal. I think I should just go with the cheapest and be done with it.

Haven't experienced any Airtricity sales rep myself, or their customer service.
Haven't found Bord Gais customer service to be great either, get different answers from different people.

That said, how often will we need customer service for gas and electric, not often really imo.

Trying to decide if it's better/cheaper to go with Airtricity for both or Airtricty/Flogas.

Does anyone know how long Flogas will commit to beating Bord Gais for?
    i.e. is it a 1 year offer/forever.
Cannot find any indication on the Flogas website.
    Thanks in advance.

Can you get flogas everywhere? Or is it restricted to certain areas?

it's anywhere you can get natural gas.

Airtricity are now offering 20% cheaper gas than Bord Gais, I switched at the weekend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,280 ✭✭✭toby2111

Yeh,saw that. But you have to sign up for 12 month contract which no other provider does.I think thats because there may be a price war when ESB gets deregulated, could be wrong though.I'm going to switch to Flogas for a few months, then maybe switch to Airtricity if prices dont drop further.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 365 ✭✭d1980

Your right, you can break the 12 months but you pay 100€ to break it and also the electricity discount is not as big. We use the gas more than the electricity so happy to do it. eirther way, its cheaper than being with ESB/Bord Gais.

I move to flogas a few months ago

An Airtricity sales person called today telling me flogas reduced price is only till 31st Demember 2010
    is that correct?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,207 ✭✭✭Rashers72

As far as I understand it, the Flogas discount % is not for any defined period - i.e. they could reduce the discount tomorrow. They will commit to being cheaper then BG no matter what.
However, if I swap to Flogas, I lose some of my existing electricity discount with BG. Only a small % discount, but something to be aware of.
The Gas regulator (CER I think) is due to set the prices for BG in the month of September, for the next 12 months. Once they do that, Flogas will then confirm their % discount for the next 12 months. That is what they did last year, I believe.
So I am waiting to see what this discount will be before I move.

Thanks Rashers for that,I'll do the same. Also hopefully when ESB gets deregulated,it may reduce prices for us all even more.God knows, they make enough profits from us every year.

I rang round for a 47Kg Cylinder of LPG yesterday. My Local Supplier (TERVGAS) was €80.00 A few of the Calor Agents were €105-110. The Flogas Agents were €113-115. My opinion is that Flogas have really upped their prices, and when I remonstrated with one of the Agents that their prices were an eye watering 22% up on last Year she said her hands were tied as FLOGAS dictated the RRP to distributors/Retailers.
