USB Device(IPOD) has malfunctioned error message

Has anyone found a solution to what seems like a common problem. It tells me to replace the device if problem persists:rolleyes: The IPOD worked perfectly on my sisters laptop(she's away now tho) and on my PS3 but not on my laptop. What are possible causes and solutions?
